ModRetro M64 Release Date Confirmed: FPGA Nintendo 64 Console Launches July 28 with Exclusive Games

The company confirmed that the ModRetro M64 will begin shipping on July 28, 2026, bringing classic N64 cartridge gaming to modern displays with enhanced features and improved hardware compatibility. The console will retail for $229.99, while early adopters can take advantage of a limited-time discounted price. A matching M64 Pro Controller will also launch alongside the console for $89.99.

A Modern Nintendo 64 for Retro Gaming Fans

Like ModRetro’s successful Chromatic handheld, the M64 uses FPGA technology to recreate original hardware behavior rather than relying on traditional software emulation. The system supports original Nintendo 64 cartridges and outputs video at resolutions ranging from the original format up to 4K on compatible displays.

The console includes a range of modern upgrades, including:

  • HDMI video output
  • USB-C connectivity
  • Wi-Fi support for firmware updates
  • Fast boot times
  • Silent, fanless operation
  • Cartridge eject button
  • MicroSD support for future features and updates

ModRetro has also confirmed compatibility with original Nintendo 64 controllers, its new wireless M64 Pro Controller, and several third-party alternatives.

M64 Launch Games

The M64 will debut with four launch titles:

  • Buck Bumble
  • Extreme-G Turbo Fusion
  • Xeno Crisis
  • Xibalba 64

According to ModRetro, more than 240 Nintendo 64 games are already supported, with ongoing updates planned to improve compatibility and add new features over time.

Competing in the FPGA Console Market

The M64 enters a growing market of FPGA-based retro gaming systems, competing directly with offerings such as the Analogue 3D. ModRetro is positioning the M64 as a lower-cost alternative while emphasizing open-source development, low latency performance, and long-term support for both hardware and software.

With its combination of authentic cartridge support, modern display options, and a growing ecosystem of newly developed and re-released games, the ModRetro M64 is shaping up to be one of the most exciting retro gaming launches of 2026.
