Microsoft Unveils Surface Pro 12 and Surface Laptop 8 With Snapdragon X2 Chips, AI Upgrades, and Longer Battery Life

Microsoft has officially refreshed its premium Surface lineup, introducing the new Surface Pro 12 and Surface Laptop 8 powered by Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon X2 processors. The new devices continue Microsoft’s push toward AI-powered Copilot+ PCs while delivering improved performance, enhanced battery life, and updated hardware configurations.

The Surface Pro 12 arrives as a 13-inch detachable 2-in-1 device and is available with either the 10-core Snapdragon X2 Plus or the more powerful 12-core Snapdragon X2 Elite chipset. Meanwhile, the Surface Laptop 8 comes in both 13.8-inch and 15-inch sizes, offering the same processor options for users seeking a traditional laptop experience.

Microsoft says the new Snapdragon X2 platform delivers notable gains in AI processing capabilities thanks to an upgraded 80 TOPS neural processing unit (NPU), nearly doubling the AI performance available on previous-generation Snapdragon X systems. The company is positioning these machines as next-generation Copilot+ PCs capable of handling advanced on-device AI workloads.

Battery life has also been improved. Microsoft claims the Surface Pro 12 can deliver up to 15.5 hours of use, while the Surface Laptop 8 can reach as much as 20 hours under certain workloads. Graphics performance has also received a boost compared to earlier Surface models.

The overall design remains familiar, with Microsoft focusing primarily on internal upgrades rather than a major redesign. New color options have been introduced, and select configurations continue to offer premium display choices, including OLED panels on higher-end models.

Pricing has increased compared to the previous generation. The Surface Pro 12 starts at $1,499 with 16GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, while the Surface Laptop 8 starts at $1,599 with 16GB of RAM and a 512GB SSD. Higher-spec configurations with additional storage and memory are also available.

The launch reinforces Microsoft’s commitment to Windows on Arm and AI-focused computing, as the company continues to expand its Copilot+ PC ecosystem with more powerful Snapdragon-powered hardware.
