Plex is expanding its ambitions beyond media streaming with the introduction of several new social features designed to help users discover, discuss, and share movies and TV shows. The update arrives as the company continues implementing significant subscription price increases, signaling a broader push toward community engagement and recurring revenue growth.

Among the headline additions is Discussions, a built-in forum system that allows users to chat about films and television series directly within Plex. The feature aims to create a dedicated space for entertainment conversations, potentially reducing the need for users to turn to external platforms such as Reddit for recommendations and discussions. Plex says the feature will be moderated through a combination of AI-powered tools and human oversight.
The company is also rolling out Lists, enabling users to create, customize, and share collections of their favorite content. Users can react to lists with emojis, add images, and organize recommendations for friends and followers. Future updates are expected to include list imports from other services, along with commenting and follow features.

Another new addition is Match Score, a recommendation tool that analyzes a user’s viewing habits and ratings to estimate how likely they are to enjoy a particular title. The feature is intended to improve content discovery across Plex’s growing entertainment ecosystem. Users will also gain access to Alerts, which provide notifications related to followed movies, shows, creators, and user-generated lists.
The latest rollout builds on Plex’s ongoing transformation from a personal media server platform into a broader streaming and content discovery hub. Previous updates introduced social features such as public profiles, reviews, and friend activity tracking, laying the groundwork for a more community-driven experience.
The social expansion comes amid a series of price increases. Plex previously raised the cost of its Plex Pass subscription for the first time in a decade and has continued adjusting pricing across its premium offerings. The company has also announced major increases for its Lifetime Plex Pass tier and Remote Watch Pass service as it shifts toward a more sustainable recurring-revenue model.
With Discussions, Lists, Match Score, and Alerts, Plex is positioning itself as more than just a media management tool. The company is betting that stronger social engagement can help users discover content more effectively while keeping them invested in the Plex ecosystem for the long term.
