8849 Tank 5 Rugged Phone Debuts: 220-Lumen Projector, Dimensity 9400e, and a Monstrous 17,600mAh Battery

The 8849 Tank lineup has carved out a distinct niche in the rugged smartphone market. Built primarily for outdoor enthusiasts, these heavy-duty devices offer much more than just dust, water, and drop resistance. They are famous for packing massive batteries designed to last for days and boasting highly unusual built-in features—like projectors capable of turning any camping trip into an outdoor movie night.

Earlier this year, the brand introduced the 8849 Tank X, which turned heads as the first in the lineup to feature a noticeably brighter 220-lumen, 1080p DLP projector with laser autofocus. Now, the company is raising the stakes with its upcoming model: the 8849 Tank 5. Set to launch on June 10, the Tank 5 takes that same high-quality projector and pairs it with a significantly faster processor, a higher-resolution display, and cutting-edge software.

Flagship Display and Performance Upgrades

Unlike typical rugged phones that compromise on screen quality, the Tank 5 sports a premium 6.73-inch AMOLED display with a crisp 3200 x 1440 pixel resolution. It supports a smooth 120 Hz refresh rate and can reach an impressive peak brightness of up to 3,000 nits, ensuring it remains perfectly legible even under direct sunlight.

Under the hood, the device is powered by the capable MediaTek Dimensity 9400e processor. It is paired with up to 18GB of ultra-fast LPDDR5X RAM and 512GB of UFS 4.0 storage, offering flagship-level speeds for apps, multitasking, and media playback.

A Built-In Projector That Accepts External Inputs

The standout feature remains the integrated 220-lumen, 1080p DLP projector, complete with laser autofocus for sharp images. However, the Tank 5 adds a massive quality-of-life upgrade for media lovers: a DisplayPort input. This allows you to hook up external devices (like a laptop or gaming console) directly to the phone and use it purely as a portable projector. If you want to use the phone as a source instead, its USB 3.1 Type-C port also supports DisplayPort 1.4 video output.

Monstrous Battery and “Pants-Sagging” Dimensions

To keep the power-hungry projector running, the phone is equipped with a gargantuan 17,600 mAh battery. When you aren’t streaming movies, this pack is designed to deliver multiple days of normal use. Refueling is handled via rapid 120W fast charging, and the device supports 25W reverse wireless/wired charging, meaning you can easily use it as a heavy-duty power bank to top up your other gear.

Unsurprisingly, carrying this much hardware requires some serious physical compromise. Rated IP68 for water and dust resistance, the Tank 5 is thick and heavy. It measures 177.1 x 87.3 x 33.8 mm (1.33 inches thick) and weighs in at a hefty 715 grams (1.58 pounds). While it technically fits in a standard pocket, it will certainly add some noticeable weight to your pants.

Cameras, Extras, and Connectivity

The phone’s imaging setup includes a 50MP primary camera, a 50MP night vision camera for low-light scouting, and a 32MP front-facing selfie camera. Rather than relying on a standard weak phone flash for illumination, the back of the device features a dedicated, ultra-bright camp light.

Other notable hardware features include:

  • A 3.5mm headphone jack
  • A microSD card slot supporting up to 2TB of expandable storage
  • A side-mounted fingerprint sensor
  • Advanced wireless tech: Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 5.4, NFC, and eSIM support for 5G NR networks.

Software and Availability

The 8849 Tank 5 will ship running the latest Android 16 operating system. However, prospective buyers should note that the company has not made any official guarantees regarding future OS upgrades or long-term security patches.

Full pricing details and retail availability will be officially revealed when the phone launches on June 10.
