iTiny Bluetooth Keyboard Shown Off, Makes Portable Typing Worthwhile

August 26, 2010 – 12:23 pm

Bluetooth keyboards aren’t a new market. Even the miniature versions of the portable pieces of tech aren’t all that new, either. But, that’s no reason to ignore them. Especially not the good ones. And while the iTiny Bluetooth Keyboard is new to the market, it’s certainly not the smallest, nor is it the only one to support connections to Sony’s PlayStation 3.

While the main purpose of the iTiny Bluetooth Keyboard may be for Apple’s iPhone or iPod Touch, you can obviously see where the possibilities are here. Wit the Bluetooth connectivity, you’re options are almost endless in today’s age. And, at only five- by two-inches, this small gadget could indeed be the way you type out your next email on your mobile device.

It’s a full QWERTY keyboard, with a dedicated row for numbers, and a space key (even if it doesn’t look as big as it probably should be). And as you can see, every key gets used to the best of its ability, with plenty of secondary options for your choosing. As for specifications, they look something like this: support for Bluetooth 2.0 products, with a frequency band of 2.4GHz. There’s a 200mAh rechargeable Li-ion battery inside, which should last you about 50 hours of constant usage, or 400 hours of stand-bye time. It supports not only Apple’s iOS, but also Google’s Android, Microsoft’s Windows Mobile, and Nokia’s Symbian platforms. No mention of when the device will hit store shelves, but hopefully it’s soon.

HTC updates HD mini for improved sound handling in calls

August 17, 2010 – 7:03 am

The Windows Mobile-powered HTC HD mini smartphone has just received an update which will (hopefully) improve sound handling when in a call. Of course, this update does not apply to everyone under the sun, as it requires your HD mini to run on a ROM version that is less than or equal to 1.36.XXX.X, which basically targets all SKUs save for those from Vodafone Spain. Those who fall under the category (that would be most HD mini owners out there) can then backup their precious data before proceeding as you never know when Murphy might strike. Check out here for the nitty gritty.

How to install Android on an HTC HD2

August 16, 2010 – 1:15 pm

All phones deserve a bit of Android love, right?  The HTC HD2, a T-Mobile offering which runs Windows Mobile 6.5, can be served up with a dish of Froyo pretty painlessly, and only requires about 600mb on the SD card.  All you need to do is download this file, unzip it, place the folder on the SD card and navigate to it via the Windows Mobile File Manager App.

From there, tap the file named “CLRCAD”, and  then tap “Haret”, which applies a sound fix and builds the Android OS respectively.  The only downside is the lack of an effective bootloader for easy switching between Windows and Android OS, so if you need to restart the phone, you have to complete the process all over again.  So, if any of you reading this are HD2 owners and decide to try installing Android, please leave a comment below and let us know how it goes.

(note: altering your phone’s software can void your warranty and/or render your phone unusable, so do so at your own risk)

Mobile TV: Bigger Is Better

August 12, 2010 – 12:54 pm

Bigger is better for mobile TV: That’s the gist of some new numbers released by MobiTV today. The mobile TV service operator has been taking a good look at usage patterns during the World Cup, and it found that users with bigger screens stay tuned much longer than those with a smaller handset. It also found some significant differences between various mobile platforms, with Android users watching far more soccer than iPhone users.

MobiTV is reporting that users with 5-inch mobile screens viewed 118.2 minutes of World Cup action on average. Users with a 4-inch mobile screen tuned in for 102.2 minutes on average, and users with 3- and 2-inch screens clocked much less viewing time (67.4 minutes and 61.1 minutes, respectively).

The company also observed that iPhone users watched 77.8 minutes of soccer during the World Cup on average. That’s still slightly more than BlackBerry (65.4 minutes) and Windows Mobile users (62.7 minutes), but significantly less than Android users, who stayed tuned for an average of 125.7 minutes.

Those findings come hot on the heels of a study claiming that iPhone users have more sex than Android users. Well, at least we now know what Android users do while they don’t have sex…

Froyo Ported To the HD2

August 3, 2010 – 3:28 pm

If you picked up the HD2 and realized that you basically bought a WinMo lemon, never fear. Some charming Italian men have ported Android 2.2 Froyo to the HD2 and it seems to run everything perfectly. Basically if you run their hack, which is available here, you turn your WinMo 6.5 phone into the a Droid X or EVO 4G. Great, right?

HTC To Sell HTC-Branded Android, Windows Mobile Smartphones In China

July 27, 2010 – 3:22 pm

Taiwan-based phone manufacturer HTC has been selling smartphones in China under the name Dopod for many years, but this morning the company announced that it will soon start selling TD-SCDMA-based phones with the HTC brand actually attached to them.

In a press release issued moments ago, the company said it has teamed up with carrier China Mobile to bring future HTC phones to market and formed a new distribution partnership with China’s largest electronics distributor, GOME Electrical Appliances.

Initially coming to mainland China are HTC’s newly unveiled smartphones with the Sense user interface: The HTC Tianxi, Tianyi, Desire and Wildfire.

The latter products are familiar high-end Android phones – they will be carried by mobile operator China Unicom – but this was the first I’d ever heard of the HTC Tianxi and HTC Tianyi. According to a report from the Wall Street Journal, those two new phones will are touch-screen models designed exclusively for China Mobile.

One will apparently be a high-end model running Microsoft Windows Mobile OS (this one, perhaps?), the other a mid-priced device running Android. HTC reportedly expects the handsets will be available to consumers in September or October 2010.

Last year, HTC shipped 12 million phones globally. North America accounts for 50 percent of its market share, Europe for 30 percent while 20 percent comes from the rest of the world.

HTC says the move to introduce its proper brand in China is to enable it provide more after-sales service to consumers, but it’s undoubtedly also a strategy to protect itself from the fast-growing number of counterfeit HTC devices that are increasingly available on the Chinese market, as well as a way for the company to gear up for the battle against Research in Motion, Nokia and of course Apple, which isn’t yet selling the iPhone 4 in China although it introduced the iPhone 3GS in October 2009.

If you’re interested in this market, you should read our recent guest post on why Android is poised to dominate in China.

Spotify Coming To Windows Mobile?

June 25, 2010 – 11:41 am

While the momentum seems to be behind iOS and Google’s Android at the moment, it seems that the folks behind the popular Spotify music streaming service haven’t forgotten that there are a great many Windows Mobile users out there too, as word is going around that the popular music streaming service will be coming to Windows Mobile, and the software, when released, will be fully featured. If the rumors are true, aside from supporting streaming music, it’ll also allow users to save files to the storage card for off-line listening, and will support all major screen resolutions. It’s expected to be available within a month, and hopefully it won’t be delayed.
