Galaxy Nexus LTE casts slightly larger silhouette

November 24, 2011 – 4:11 pm

Getting giddy of the thought of an LTE-powered Galaxy Nexus? Well, Google, has just unveiled a full 360-degree view of the Verizon-bound smartphone, and it’s packing a bigger caboose. Around 0.6mm thicker than the HSPA+ version available now in the UK, the 4G-stuffed version loses, at least visually, some of its curved charm and the chin’s become more prominent too. Fortunately, as the tech specs confirm, the slightly bigger body does cram in an extra 100mAh of battery juice, presumably to feed that LTE radio. Will it feel any different in the hand? It looks like we’ll have to wait until Verizon decides to furnish us with one — whenever that is.

Motorola Confirms September Droid Bionic Launch

July 29, 2011 – 3:28 pm

Let’s put an end to some of this Motorola Bionic release date guesswork here and now. No less than Motorola CEO Sanjay Jha discussed the Bionic in a call to investors today, stating unequivocally that the Bionic will hit stores this September.

Most recently, we heard rumors that the Bionic wouldn’t get here until September, but were awaiting something a little more official; we’d feel better hearing from Verizon, as well, but otherwise this is about as official as you can get. Earlier, August 4 came up as a potential release date, and as recent as earlier this week we’ve found support for an August release. It’s clear now that there will just be a little longer to wait for the phone.

Sure, Jha didn’t say just when in September the Bionic will be released, so there’s still some mystery remaining. September 1 is one date we’ve heard, and as a Thursday, it makes sense for a Verizon release. Waiting until September will likely put the Bionic up against the next-gen iPhone; let’s hope Motorola knows what it’s doing with the release this time, and we don’t see the Bionic sent back to the drawing board yet again in a bid to stay current.

Two months after being launched, Verizon cuts the price of the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play by 50%

July 21, 2011 – 6:23 pm

Back in February of this year, when Sony Ericsson took the veil off their terribly leaked “PlayStation Phone”, which we now know to be the “Xperia Play”, we questioned what the long term viability of such a niche smartphone would be. There’s no doubt in our minds that several of our readers are hardcore gamers, but they make up a tiny percentage of the overall smartphone population. Case in point, Verizon Wireless introduced the Xperia Play in mid May for $200 on a 2 year contract. This week, just 2 short months later, they’ve slashed the price by 50% to just $99. The only other device we can think of that received a similar treatment was the Microsoft Kin. Now what can we deduce from this “sale”? Verizon has plenty of inventory they want to get out of their warehouses, which is a fancy way of saying that the Xperia Play isn’t selling.

Looking back just a few short years ago, we see a similar tale with Nokia and their “N-Gage” platform. It started out as a dedicated gaming device, which required proprietary cartridges, but then it evolved into an application that most any high end Symbian 3rd Edition device could run. Later Nokia would decide that they didn’t want to have a separate experience for gaming and applications, the latter provided by the then recently launched Ovi Store, so they took the axe to N-Gage and thus killed what would have otherwise been a potentially interesting unique selling point.

Now there’s one other company who is trying this whole “dedicated mobile gaming” thing, and that’s Microsoft. Every Windows Phone on the market has a dedicated XBOX Live tile, and that’s purposefully done as to let consumers know where the games are, versus the Windows Phone Marketplace. It’s bound to confuse more than a few people, but hey, at least it’s something different compared to the all mighty Apple App Store.

Verizon Motorola Droid 3 Unboxing (Video)

July 21, 2011 – 12:50 pm

In 2009, Motorola and Verizon announced the original Droid. A highly popular device which really kicked off, thanks to Verizon’s Droid campaign, a revolution in which not only geeks had Android phones.

The Droid 3 is the new successor to the line, and we have the unboxing for you. It still has the Motorola Droid “tail”, and a slide out keyboard (which seems a little stiff), plus a dual-core processor.

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xMBuhKHqUfc

The Motorola Droid 3 is available from Verizon for $199 with a two year contract.

First impressions

- Feels comfortable in-hand (smoothed corners, soft-touch plastic back)
- Pentile display means some noticeable pixelation
- No 4G

Apple recalling Verizon iPad 2 due to 3G issues?

June 11, 2011 – 9:12 am

Apple is reported to be recalling a few shipments of the Verizon iPad 2, some of which have already been ordered by customers online. A few months ago, Apple said it was investigating issues wherein iPad 2 units were dropping their 3G signal on Verizon’s network. Perhaps some of the batches sent out were flawed or affected, hence the recall.

Electronista reports:

FedEx packages are reportedly being marked “return to sender” at Apple’s request, although in some cases the positions of Apple support staff may be inconsistent with FedEx’s, either acknowledging a recall, claiming no information on the matter or stating that the problem is with FedEx. Supporting the idea of a recall is a witness at the Lakeside Shopping Center Apple Store in Louisiana, who claims that two people recently left the store with a cart full of boxes, which had “Verizon 64GB” and “Verizon 32GB” marked on the outside.

It’s doubtful that the boxes being hauled off were actual purchases, so this very well may be a recall. It’s hard to say what will happen to current Verizon iPad 2 owners whose units might be suffering 3G network issues.

For those who ordered the Apple tablet, the wait might have to be stretched a bit longer than it already was. The estimated wait time is still listed as one to two weeks, but apparently some customers have been waiting much longer. And with this alleged recall, it seems that it’s going to be another test of patience for those wanting the iOS device. It has been reported that the affected units are being replaced, however, and that some customers may receive refunds for the inconvenience.

AT&T models don’t seem to be affected, and Wi-Fi devices aren’t having any issues, either.

HP Pre 3 Pre-Orders Open In Europe, Available Late June

May 20, 2011 – 11:14 am

While HP’s webOS-powered Veer has just arrived in the States, it’s beefier big brother, the Pre 3, is taking its good old time. We’ve seen what looks like both an AT&T and a Verizon-equipped Pre 3 get their FCC certifications, but haven’t heard just when the smartphone might go up for sale. HP’s site for the Pre 3 says that there’s “planned availability this summer”, but just when and where? The first signs of upcoming Pre 3 sales have surfaced, with the German version of Amazon now accepting pre-orders for the smartphone.

You can place your order now for the Pre 3, which Amazon.de says will be available as of June 30. The off-contract smartphone will set you back the equivalent of about $640. For that money, you’ll be getting a phone powered by a 1.40GHz Snapdragon, with 512MB of RAM, a 3.58-inch WVGA display, and 8GB of storage; we haven’t found the 16GB version of the phone up for pre-order yet.

According to the FCC docs we saw, the Pre 3 may usher in the next decimal revision of webOS, with version 2.3 noted as present on the evaluated model. What changes will the update have in store? We should know for sure in a little over a month. Hopefully by then, we’ll also have word on when the smartphone will be introduced into other markets around the world.

HTC Droid Incredible 2 officially announced

April 26, 2011 – 5:49 pm

It took its time, but it’s almost here. HTC has just officially announced the HTC Incredible 2 today. Prior to today, there have been countless leaks about the Android smartphone and today’s announcement confirms all the details we’ve already known for awhile now. The HTC Droid Incredible 2 is the successor to the original Droid Incredible, and rebranded for Verizon’s network (it’s called the Incredible S in other countries).

The HTC Droid Incredible 2 will be a global phone, meaning you’ll be able to use it in over 200 countries all over the world (just as long as you plug a supported SIM card into the phone). It comes with a 4″ screen, a 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, Android 2.2 with HTC Sense, an 8 megapixel camera with dual LED flash and 720p HD video recording capabilities; a 1.3megapixel front facing camera, Adobe Flash Player, WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS. It also packs SRS WOWHD surround sound, and integrated noise cancellation for improved sound quality be it for entertainment or having conversations.

The HTC Droid Incredible 2 will go on sale this Thursday, April 28, for $199.99 and a 2-year contract. With no 4G LTE and an outdated version of Android, this phone might be a pretty hard sell at that price, but its global-phone capabilities and large screen should draw some attention.

How the Name Droid Saved Motorola and Made Android

April 19, 2011 – 12:14 pm

Wired has a really interesting story on the pre-Droid days of Android. If you remember back in 2009, Android was hardly the big player it is now. The G1 was nice, the myTouch 3G was a slight improvement and the Hero was a step in the right direction but it needed somethingdifferent, something that would draw a line in the sand and say we’re not the iPhone and we don’t want to be. Something that would become the Droid.

But even more than Android needing a hit to legitimize itself, Motorola needed a grand slam to get itself out of its post RAZR hole. Motorola smartly teamed up with an iPhone-less Verizon to create an eventual dynamic duo. But everything needed to be perfect! The name Motorola was going with internally with their phone—Shoals—didn’t quite do it for Verizon so Verizon reached out to McGarry Bowen, a young ad agency, for help. Wired reports:

“We told them they had a week,” said someone who was involved in the discussions. “A few days later, [they] come back and says, ‘What do you think when I say Droid?”

In retrospect, what the agency had done was simple: It turned the phone’s menacing looks into its biggest asset by marketing it as an anti-iPhone. The iPhone was smooth and refined, so they would pitch the Droid as rough and ready for work. The iPhone’s electronics and software were inaccessible, so they’d market the phone’s hackability. “If there had been a phone in the movie Black Hawk Down, it would have looked like the Droid.”

loved the Droid because of just that. It embraced what it was. Big, black, beautiful and not the iPhone. Of course it didn’t hurt that it was a great phone with a fast processor, super crisp screen and running a maturing Android 2.0 but it was a bold move by Motorola to swing for the fences and a genius move by Verizon to lock up an iPhone competitor (that would ironically help land them the iPhone in the future).

It’s sorta funny to look back at the harsh marketing of the Droid—from the commercial spots, to the name,to the phone itself —and see that as the tipping point of when little android became Android. But it’s true! It was the phone and name that changed the game for Android (of course the Nexus One coming after didn’t hurt either). Read the whole report, with some great stories about Andy Rubin and Google working with Motorola, at Wired.

How To: Install Android 2.3.3 Gingerbread update on Verizon Droid X

April 14, 2011 – 9:29 am

Attention Droid X users: There’s supposedly an OTA update coming to your handset that will give you Android 2.3 Gingerbread powers. While unconfirmed from Verizon at the moment, we can confirm that there is indeed a an update file floating around that will bring your Droid X up to the latest version of Android OS – and we have it.

The update brings the handset up to version 2.3.3, the latest version of Android for phones, and you’ll have a few tweaks throughout. The ROM has yet to be rooted, but that could happen as soon as today. To get to the latest version, you’ll need to be on the stock software, and if you’re not, you need to get back to 2.3.340 before you continue.

According to Computer World, Verizon has said that it is not currently pushing an OTA update. This could mean that this build is not final, and may not be fully cooked, so keep that in mind when flashing. That said, the build will likely be usable enough to be your daily driver.

To manually install Gingerbread on your Droid X, follow along.

We’re going to assume you’re on the stock Droid X ROM 2.3.340, and you take the responsibility if anything goes wrong. So, without further ado:

  1. Download the Gingerbread update file here and rename the file to update.zip
  2. Place the file in the root of your microSD card. (Inside no folders)
  3. Power down your phone
  4. Power your phone on by holding Home + Power. When you see the triangle appear, press Search. You are now in the “Recovery” system
  5. Using the volume keys, navigate to the “install update.zip” option and flash the file.

There you have it. You’re running on Gingerbread, enjoy!

Verizon successfully completes first VoLTE call in the world, plans 2012 availability

February 10, 2011 – 12:10 am

Verizon has just announced that it has completed the first voice over LTE (VoLTE) call anywhere in the world today, a 33-second dialogue between employees on LG Revolutions in the company’s headquarters in Basking Ridge, New Jersey, following it up with a number of other calls where staffers were able to talk and use data services simultaneously — thanks in no small part to the fact that LTE treats voice just as it treats any other type of data. We’d initially gotten the impression yesterday that Verizon would be starting to roll out voice over LTE (VoLTE) with the Revolution in mid-2011, but the company’s press release today is saying that they’ll be working to “enhance” the VoLTE experience in 2011 with commercially availability now expected next year. High-fidelity calls are expected to be part of that experience, so it’ll be harder than ever to hold a call when you’ve got a bad cold. Remember the throat lozenges, alright?
