Dell Streak Priced: $299 With Contract, $549 Without

July 27, 2010 – 8:47 pm

The remaining details of Dell Streak’s release continue to trickle out. This morning we learned it would eventually run Froyo. Now we know the price: $299 with a 2 year AT&T contract or $549 unlocked.

All of this comes right from Dell themselves, but what’s still unclear is when you can get one.

This new site says that people who register on the pre-order page between July 20th and 27th (today) will get first stab via email link later today. So, you know, go do that.

Meanwhile, Dell’s also serving up availability information on their lightweight Android phone, the Dell Aero—it’ll be available August 9 for $99 with contract and $299 without.

Unlocked Dell Streak release imminent

July 23, 2010 – 12:54 am

Dell has announced that its Streak Android MID is set to arrive in the US in unlocked form later this month, though the company is still yet to confirm pricing.  The 5-inch Android tablet is currently available for pre-sale registration; we’re yet to see it launch on AT&T as was tipped to occur earlier in July.

As with the European Streak, which we reviewed last month, the US version has a 3G modem (suited to AT&T’s 3G bands), WiFi b/g, Bluetooth and GPS, along with a 5-megapixel rear-facing camera with autofocus and an LED flash, a front-facing video call camera, and a customized version of Android 1.6.  Dell has promised an update to Android 2.x later in the year, though there’s no definitive timescale for its release.

iPhone 4 officially jailbroken and unlocked

July 13, 2010 – 10:41 pm

Before we continue, a quick recap of the terms:

Jailbroken: Modified to be able to install third-party applications not approved by Apple, generally via an alternative App Store.

Unlocked: Able to run on GSM networks other than the one it was originally sold for. In the case of US iPhones, that means an unlocked AT&T iPhone could run on T-Mobile (sans 3G) or any of the GSM carriers in Canada.

The iPhone 4 is now both of those.

While some people are still doubting the legitimacy of the infamous-but-now-retired Geohot’s unlock claims, let there be no doubts here: long-time jailbreak icon MuscleNerd and the ridiculously clever planetbeing have claimed a successful unlock, stifling haters with a shot of the handset running Cydia (one of the aforementioned alternative App Stores) while connected to Bell Canada.

As these things usually go, the hack isn’t ready for public consumption quite yet. So when will it be? Who knows. There’s no ETA beyond “eventually”. If past trends are any indication, they’re likely waiting until after Apple sends out the first software update in hopes that their loopholes go unpatched.

iPhone 4 Diamond Edition: white, unlocked, and $20k

July 5, 2010 – 9:26 pm

Looking for something a bit more eye-catching than a iPhone 4 with a wooden veneer? Then it looks like you can once again thank Stuart Hughes for throwing any subtlety to the wind and going all out with the so-called iPhone 4 Diamond Edition. As you can see, not only does the phone pack a smattering of diamonds (including a bedazzled Apple logo), but it’s a white iPhone 4 (32GB, naturally), and unlocked for good measure. Of course, there’s no guarantees you’ll actually get it before white iPhone 4s become commonplace, but we’re pretty sure this is $20,000 well spent either way.

Dell Streak now available unlocked for £449

June 28, 2010 – 3:35 pm

Not a fan of being tied down to a single network? Neither are we, so let’s all hold hands and rejoice at the news that Dell’s 5-inch Streak has today become available to purchase unlocked over in the UK. Freedom lovers will have to pay a hefty £50 extra for being unshackled from O2′s chains, but the £449 ($676) price point remains significantly lower than the 16GB iPhone 4 and should prove mighty tempting. Then again, if you wait until next month, you might be able to import one from the good old US of A, where Dell will be selling the unlocked Streak at a thrifty $500. It all depends on what you have more of, money or patience.

HTC Legend with North American 3G now available unlocked

June 18, 2010 – 12:25 am

Sure, the Desire’s coming to a handful of regional American carriers later this year, but what if you want the smaller, sleeker, more aluminum-clad Legend? Well, there aren’t any carrier-branded options in the States — but it seems that a number of unlocked units with US 3G bands are starting to ooze out of the cracks. Negri Electronics has an 850 / 1900MHz 3G Legend in its store for a shade under $500, which means you’re not getting much of a discount over the more powerful 850 / 1900MHz version of the Nexus One — but you are getting a pretty sweet unibody shell and an optical d-pad. Any takers?

Apple iPhone 4 pre-orders are go, unlocked in UK!

June 15, 2010 – 2:56 pm

You know what to do… unless you wanted the iPhone 4 in white which is unavailable for pre-order. Pricing for a SIM-free and unlocked iPhone 4 is set at £499 (16GB) or £599 (32GB) in the UK or €629 (16GB) and €739 (32GB) in France. Pre-orders are limited to two per customer.

P.S. The 8GB iPhone 3GS is out for those of you looking to keep it old school at $99 on a two-year AT&T contract.

Update: Looks like Apple’s servers are struggling to keep up. For what it’s worth, we hear that US pre-orderers are having more success with the AT&T link found in the source below.
