T-Mobile UK Preps Truly Unlimited Mobile Broadband and Smartphone Deal for July

June 29, 2011 – 11:42 am

Mobile operator T-Mobile UK, which in recent times has perhaps become better known for restricting its Mobile Broadband data allowances instead of raising them (here), will from next month launch a new “truly unlimited internet” service with “no fair use limits or run on rates” for Smartphone users.

ISPreview.co.uk understands that the new deal will be available to any customers that purchase a 24 month contract or whom are already paying £25 or more a month for their mobile service. The new deals are due to surface between 1st and 4th July next month.

The move is likely an attempt to take on Three (3) UK, which last year went in the opposite direction to most by launching The One Plan with “all-you-can-eat data“. The deal had previously only come with a 1GB usage allowance.

Until recently the mobile industry had been extremely worried about low revenues and growing data usage, which prompted a crackdown on “unlimited” services. That certainly didn’t last long.

UK: Pre-order HTC Sensation from Three; Free with 30 GBP/month plan

June 20, 2011 – 12:52 pm

Three UK has started accepting pre-orders for the HTC Sensation. The carrier is offering the device free of charge as long as you commit on a 30 GBP a month plan, which comes with 1GB of data, 500 voice minutes and 5,000 texts a month. The earliest possible delivery date is June 29th so if you act quickly you won’t have to wait for too long to get your hands on the Sensation.

Alternatively, there’s also another (suggested) plan for demanding users, which for 37 GBP a month gets you unlimited data, 2,000 any network minutes, 5,000 Three-to-Three minutes and 5,000 texts. It’s a massive plan suited for folks who really need to call, text and use mobile data a lot. Otherwise, 1GB a month is more than enough for most of us.

As a reminder, the HTC Sensation is one of the best Android smartphones unveiled to date. It rocks a dual-core processor, 4.3-inch qHD capacitive touchscreen, HSPA and Wi-Fi connectivity, 8-megapixel camera with full HD video recording capability, GPS and a whole lot more.

You can get additional information about Three’s offer from this page.

UK operators band together for NFC revenue

June 17, 2011 – 10:07 am

Gang of three (not including Three)

Vodafone, Telefonica UK and Everything Everywhere have banded together to create a clearing house for NFC applications, providing a single point of contact for cross network applications.

The unnamed joint venture should launch before the end of the year, providing banks, merchants and advertisers with a single point of call if they want to start offering, accepting or exploiting proximity payment systems – as long as they don’t want to offer the service to Three’s customers.

The idea is very similar to the Isis project being pursued by the US operators, only on this side of the pond operators plan to make money selling cross-network advertising and promotions, with the ability to pay for stuff being peripheral to the project.

Once the joint venture is in action it will be able to certify (SIM-based) NFC applications, allowing the same application to be downloaded and used on phones from different mobile operators without requiring the supplier to jump though any more hoops.

A bank deciding to deploy a proximity-payment version of its services will first develop the application, then take it to the joint venture for approval. Once approved the application should be available to customers of any mobile network operator, except Three.

But it’s not just about payments – the operators are very keen to promote the advertising potential of sending out electronic coupons and other applications made possible with NFC. In presenting the joint venture O2 pointed out that its offer-based advertising service, O2 More, now has 2.5 million customers who’ve already opted in to receive special offers and other promotions direct to their phone. Having a standard, and secure, platform should expand that business.

So the joint venture won’t just be a platform; it will also sell advertising based on that platform. That advertising will be based on tokens, electronic ticketing and so forth, but more importantly it will be delivered across network operators to end customers based on their demographic information – subject to suitable measures to protect customer privacy.

The joint venture doesn’t lock out Three, or anyone else. Everything Everywhere, Telefonica UK* and Vodafone will be equal partners in owning the joint venture, but they will also be customers buying into the service, and say that Three is welcome to become a customer too, though Three’s CEO Kevin Russell isn’t very impressed.

“[We] are more than a little concerned that – as a core competitor – we have been excluded from this joint venture”, he said in a statement.

The others argue that Three has never shown any great interest in NFC payments, which is why it wasn’t invited to the table.

All the operators have been struggling to work out how to make money from NFC, given the number of players involved in processing electronic payments which are often expected to provide revenue. The UK plan is that by making it easier for advertisers to buy NFC-based advertising more of them will buy such campaigns, bringing in more money for all the operators involved.

The venture will need regulatory approval, and even the most optimistic estimate says it will be 12 months before we see any real applications deployed, but if there really is a driving desire for advertising (and payments) delivered direct to one’s pocket then this joint venture will help it happen. ®

* O2 is just a brand these days: the company is called Telefonica UK.

HTC ChaCha is available on Three.

June 7, 2011 – 12:32 pm

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lzpN6yjRq3A

Hands up, I’ll admit it. I’m a Facebook addict.  Before I’ve even got out of bed I’ve usually checked my wall and replied to an inbox or two. I can’t really remember life before Facebook and I’m sure a lot of you are the same. There are over 500 million users worldwide of which 200 million check Facebook on their phone and hopefully  you’re all as excited as me for the arrival of the HTC ChaCha.

The ChaCha is fully integrated with Facebook and it’s now available on Three. The new Android smartphone comes with a ’Facebook button’ (which glows!) that makes it quicker and easier to upload photos, check in and update your status on Facebook.

The ChaCha is made for people like me, people who want to immediately connect to Facebook. ChaCha runs on the latest version of Android (2.3), also known as Gingerbread, which means the whole experience is really smooth and efficient. It comes with a 2.6 inch touchscreen as well as a Qwerty keypad so you have the option of touching or typing.

The HTC ChaCha on The One Plan with all-you-can-eat data means you can spend as much time as you like on Facebook without worrying about your bill at the end of the month. You can update your status, check in, upload pictures, use Facebook chat until your heart’s content and never run out of data.

One of my favourite aspects of the phone is the ‘Friends Stream’ widget which can sit on your home screen.  This way you can read Facebook status updates, see what your friends are posting on each other’s walls and then with one click, comment or ‘like’ the status.

I sent Sedge out to put the HTC ChaCha to the test, as a Social Media Producer for Three she’s even more of a Facebook addict than me. The pictures she took with its 5MP camera were great quality; they even got a few ‘likes’ from her friends.

Check out the video to see how Sedge got on with the HTC ChaCha.

Review: LG Optimus One

May 31, 2011 – 12:20 pm

Product: LG Optimus One

Specifications: 600MHz CPU, 512MB RAM, 170MB internal storage, 3.2-inch HVGA 320×480 display, 3MP camera, microSD 32GB supported, 1,500mAh battery, Bluetooth, WiFi, 3G, micro USB, FM radio, GPS, Android 2.2 Froyo OS, 129g

Price From: £130 for unlocked or £18 a month for 24-month Three contract

The LG Optimus One is a handset that simply feels distinctly average. With a very uninteresting look about it, which includes its matte black finish with simple silver trim, the handset simply feels cheap.

But, the handset’s saving grace is of course, Google’s Android 2.2 (Froyo) operating system.

With a quick boot up time (around 30 seconds) and capacitive screen allowing a very fluid motion when swiping between screens, scrolling through the app menus, or finding that exciting new app available on Google’s Android Market, Froyo gives the handset a lease of life.

Unfortunately, the screen’s overall responsiveness was a slight issue as it occasionally took a few presses of the screen to select something, such as opening an app.

As with all Android handsets, the multiple homepages (default of five, but you can have up to seven) give you space to set up widgets giving you quick live information, such as your latest feed from Facebook.

Although the Optimus One benefits from the Froyo integration of services like Flash support, you now have additional services such as voice control, which lets you search the internet and navigation.

Unfortunately the biggest disappointment’s about this handset were the internet and navigation. The navigation struggled to locate itself when indoors or large urban environments (such as being stood between large buildings in Manchester City Centre). The handset also struggled with downloading web pages at any fast rate, with scrolling not always acknowledging what was being intended, and pinch-to-zoom having a life of its own. Unfortunately, lack of a decent processor and large enough display is what lets the handset down, in this case.

Using LG’s provided drivers, connecting the handset to the PC was east enough, allowing pictures, video and music to be quickly loaded onto the handset. Upon browsing through the content, I found Android doesnt natively support AVI video files (only supporting WMV, DivX and Xvid). However images and mp3 audio files played with ease.

Surprisingly, the battery life of this handset (with its 1,500mAh battery size) left little to be desired. Even with average use (which included calls, email and web browsing) and little use of on-screen widgets, the handset still needed to be charged every night, for use the next day.

In Conclusion Save your £130, and get the HTC Wildfire for £99.

Advantages: This is a cheap way of getting access to Android.

Disadvantages: The 3.2-inch display and 600MHz chip lets the handset down with problematic pinch to zoom, and inadequate mobile Internet and navigation.

Three UK starts taking pre-orders for HTC Flyer; Offers it for 169 GBP on a 30.99 GBP/month contract

May 19, 2011 – 5:46 pm

Three UK has started taking pre-orders for the HTC Flyer, the Taiwanese company’s first Android-powered tablet. The carrier asks 169 GBP for the device along with your signature on a 30.99 GBP/month two-year contract. That may sound a lot, but you should bear in mind this deal includes a whopping 15 GB of mobile data every month. In other words, you’ll be able to video talk with your buddies without ever worrying about the cost of such communication. Likewise, you may haven’t used streaming video services a lot in the past, but that could be easily changed with this mobile data plan.

Three lists May 27 as the earliest shipping date so it’s not like you’ll have to wait forever, presuming you are” a) living or working in the UK; b) actually interested in grabbing the Flyer.

As a reminder, HTC’s tablet rocks a 7-inch 1024×600 pixels capacitive touchscreen, HSPA and Wi-Fi connectivity, 1.5GHz single-core processor, GPS, 5-megapixel camera on the back, 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera, 1GB of RAM and 32GB of built-in storage.

Chromebooks get 3G connectivity via Three UK (update)

May 13, 2011 – 11:23 am

Long before Google outed Samsung’s Series 5 and Acer’s Chromebook, we’d already heard that Verizon would provide unlimited 3G coverage to the Internet giant’s netbooks, but our friends across the Atlantic still didn’t have a data carrier until yesterday. We don’t have a lot in the way of details for now, but Three UK has stepped forward as the Chromebooks’ carrier of choice for 3G data in the United Kingdom. The company is decidedly tight-lipped otherwise, but says they’ll have more details in the “next few weeks.”

Update: Well, it looks like Three has already let the cat out of the bag on this one. According to the UK’s Chrome OS site, British Chromebook users will receive a free SIM card, offering 3GB of 3G coverage for three months — see what they did there? After that, users can choose to go contract-free with a number of different pay-as-you-go plans that range from a 500MB day pass for £3 to a 7GB one-month pass for £25. More details here.

You can pick one up from Three for just £13 per month on a 24 month contract or £129.99 on Pay As You Go, and with Three’s new plans, you can include All-You-Can-Eat data from just £15 per top-up.

We’ll hopefully get more pics and video over the coming days but for now, here are some shots for you to enjoy.
