Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7, it’s finally here!

January 13, 2012 – 2:41 pm

Well sort of…

After waiting months for the Galaxy Tab 7.7 to arrive in the UK, I finally gave up and have resorted to importing one from Hong Kong, and let me tell you, this is one sexy mutha tablet!

I’ve been watching the product page at Expansys since before Christmas and they stated it would be in stock on the 13th January 2012 (which happens to be the day I received mine), however their page has been updated today to say it should be in stock in around 5 days. This I believe is a load of rubbish as it’s looking like it’s going to be a February release for the UK.

Anyway, I’m going to put some pictures up and maybe video and if you have any question about the tablet, feel free to ask on here, Facebook or Twitter.

A Gaming tablet for the extremists

January 13, 2012 – 12:51 pm

Razer have shown off a concept at CES that will easily excite a few PC gaming fanatics out there. Call Project Fiona, this is the first gaming tablet. Despite the fact that Project Fiona is a concept, Razer does plan to release the product. Reports suggest that it is targeting a Q4 2012 launch, priced under $1,000 (£650). Razer said that other gaming tablets are suitable for casual titles, but the limited navigation and control capabilities make them “impossible for hardcore PC gaming”.

“Adapted from a full featured PC gamepad, Project Fiona’s integrated dual controllers coupled with its advanced multi-touch screen are designed to make complex game navigation ergonomic and intuitive without compromising on the portability of the tablet,” said the firm on its website.

“You’ll be able to carry out headshots and command troops in-game with ease. This first-of-its-kind PC gaming tablet with integrated dual controllers is definitely not for playing casual games about unhappy birds or zombie-killing flora.”

Glasses-free 3D Android tablet takes on the 3DS

January 11, 2012 – 9:24 am

This is the WikiPad: a 3D, glasses-free tablet that’s serious about gaming and is gunning for some of the market share that Nintendo’s 3DS has. Its spec sheet ticks all the right boxes, packing in technology two years in the making.

The WikiPad is 8-inches of tablety goodness that will come with a gaming dock to turn it into a serious gaming machine. It’ll run on Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich), which means that it can access all the best titles on the Android app store such as GTA III, alongside the Android client for OnLive.

The gaming dock gives the thing proper control thanks to a full compliment of controls arranged much like the Wii U controller. There’s also HDMI out and expandable memory up to 64GB. The best feature is the 3D though, which – like the Nintendo 3DS – doesn’t require you to don any glasses.

Sharp demoed similar tech in 2010, saying that 3D tablets of this ilk were just a year away. The wait’s been a bit longer than that, but we suppose that’s the time it takes to do 3D on an 8-inch display properly. The WikiPad is set to launch in the Spring.

January 10, 2012 – 6:54 pm

NVIDIA and ASUS have announced not only the first official (according to Google) Ice Cream Sandwich tablet this week with the Transformer Prime (its release from today,) they’ve come out with the real release of the ASUS Eee Pad MeMO, a 7-inch tablet with a quad-core processor and Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, all of it for a mere $249. This is the real iPad killer, as that term has become so common, and here it is. The display is a lovely 7-inch WXGA resolution IPS panel, there’s 1GB of memory inside, and it has an NVIDIA Tegra 3 quad-core processor on the inside.

While the specifications matter a lot, we’ve got the best of the best right here in the price: a 7-inch tablet that runs the newest version of Android WITHOUT a bunch of junk over the top (you know who you are) and all of it for cheap! This tablet is the next generation of cheap tablet and it’s not junk like the rest – it’s top of the line. Everything we’ve seen Tegra 3 do in the past, this device does it to. That includes playing multiplayer Shadowgun.

The folks at NVIDIA have come correct with their offering today, and ASUS is high fiving them all the way. Does this look like the masterpiece you’ve been looking for, Android lovers? We’ll certainly be enjoying reviewing it soon! Until then – we’ll be bringing you some hands-on pics and video this week!

Also note here in the timeline that we’ve seen the name “MeMO” before in a few different form factors – ASUS do you have more MeMOs up your sleeve? We’ll find out soon!

December 14, 2011 – 5:44 pm

Incoming January 2012

Online retailer Clove has priced up the eagerly anticipated Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime – a tablet will not only serve up a slice of Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich but also Nvidia’s five-core Tegra 3 chip.

Clove wants £551 for the 10in tablet, which incorporates 64GB of solid-state storage, 2.4GHz 802.11n Wi-Fi, an 8Mp camera, (mini) HDMI out and a Micro SD card slot.

3G Tablets fall from favor say researchers

December 14, 2011 – 2:24 pm

Integrated data connections in tablets along with mobile hotspot connected slates are falling from favor, new research suggests, with WiFi-only use proliferating among owners of iPads and other models. While 60-percent of tablet owners used WiFi only and 5-percent reported some intent of subscribing to a mobile broadband plan within the next six months back in Apri, NPD Group discovered, cellular use has actually shrunk in intervening period.

In fact, WiFi-only use is now up to 65-percent, indicating tableteers are sticking to WiFi hotspots and avoiding cellular data plans. “Concern over the high cost of cellular data plans is certainly an issue,” NPD’s Eddie Hold says, ”but more consumers are finding that Wi-Fi is available in the majority of locations where they use their tablets, providing them ‘good enough’ connectivity.”

Hold told SlashGear that NPD had 3,300 participants in the survey, with a mixture of WiFi-only and WiFi + 3G tablets owned.. “But even Wi-Fi only tablets could be connected through smartphone-hotspot or Mi-Fi options” Hold pointed out to us.

“In addition,” the survey concluded, “the vast majority of tablet users already own a smartphone, which fulfills the ‘must have’ connectivity need.” That sentiment seems, in part at least, to be increasingly echoed by manufacturers producing tablets. ASUS, for instance, confirmed earlier this month that it had no plans to produce a 3G/UMTS version of the Transformer Prime, citing low customer response to the variant.

OnLive hits iOS and Android with phone/tablet cloud gaming

December 8, 2011 – 10:32 am

OnLive has launched its smartphone and tablet cloud gaming apps for iPhone, iPad and Android, bringing console-class gaming to WiFi and 3G/4G mobile devices with an optional wireless controller. This updated control pad uses what OnLive calls “adaptive wireless” to automatically find the best connection with your TV, PC, Mac, Blu-ray player, smartphone or tablet, and will go on sale on December 9 at $49.99/£39.99. Check out the video demo after the cut.

The iOS and Android apps themselves are free, though you’ll of course need to pay OnLive for the privilege of using the games. If you’re on a budget, though, you can bypass the wireless controller and just stick with the touchscreen on your phone or slate, though only 25 titles actually support that method of input; if you want to use most os OnLive’s near-200 games, you’ll need that controller.

Up to four controllers can be paired with a PC using a bundled USB adapter, along with a Bluetooth headset for in-game voice communication. It’s powered either by a pair of AA batteries or an OnLive rechargeable pack, which rejuices via a USB connection and is apparently good for up to 36hrs of play.

Those gaming on their phone or tablet can play against others using their PC, Mac or the OnLive Microconsole itself, and all the usual social and “Brag Clip” features are present. Touch-supporting games include L.A. Noire, LEGO Harry Potter: Years 1-4 and 5-7, and Defense Grid Gold.
