Nokia E7 UK pre-orders open: Will you stick with Symbian?

March 25, 2011 – 9:25 am

When we first copped the Nokia E7 QWERTY smartphone back in September, we were blown away. It’s one of the most beautiful, astoundingly designed phones we’ve ever seen. You’d have thought then, that today’s news that it’s up for pre-order in the UK at long last would be cause for celebration. The thing is, with Nokia dumping Symbian for Windows Phone 7, is there any point investing in it any more? You tell us, right here.

Head on over to Nokia’s UK online store right now and you can pre-order a Nokia E7, either on a £35 per month contract on T-Mobile or Vodafone, £469 Pay As You Go or £499, for delivery in late April. That wait itelf is galling, especially since the Nokia E7 is shipping internationally already, but what we want to know is if you’ve been lusting after this metal beauty with a 4-inch AMOLED screen, do you still want it, knowing that Nokia is all but giving up on Symbian as a smartphone OS?

Last month, Nokia announced its earth shattering plans to switch to Windows Phone 7, but since we’re not expecting the first Microkia phones until next year, that’s a long wait in between, and Nokia is still hoping to sell plenty of smartphones in the meantime.

The good news is we’re expecting our own Nokia E7 review unit imminently, so you can expect a full verdict long before then. Will you be buying? Let us know in the comments.

January 26, 2011 – 9:45 am

Tesco have put the Dell Streak on their website on Pay As You Go for just £319.20 which is a good £80 less than a sim free price direct from Dell and cheaper than O2 currently charge.

The Dell Streak is not exactly the smallest device with a massive 5 inch screen so not ideal as a day to day phone device but as a tablet is has to be one of the best and now runs Android 2.2.

Looks like when it comes to Tesco and savings on a smartphone…. every little helps (sorry I could not resist)

Top up your Orange phone by as little as 10p!

January 19, 2011 – 10:23 am

As Brits feel the pinch after the indulgences of Christmas, 94% of people plan to tighten their purse strings this year according to a poll by Orange* – the first UK communications company to offer Tiny Top Ups**, a new service that lets Pay As You Go customers top up using their loose change from as little as 10p.

With one in four (25.7%) 18-24 year olds carrying less than £1 in loose change in their pocket, Tiny Top Ups puts the power back in the pennies making it easier than ever to stay in touch – welcome news for almost one in four (23%) Brits who normally wait for pay day before they top up their phone.

The research also reveals that running out of phone credit has caused more than one in ten (13%) 18-24 year olds to miss out on a new job opportunity, 15% to lose a love interest and one in six (16.6%) to miss meeting up with a friend; however with Tiny Top Ups these missed opportunities could be a thing of the past.
Further findings revealed by the research include:

  • The value of staying in touch is more important than other life essentials for over one in four (27%) 18-24 year olds who would least like to be without phone credit, compared with only 18% who can’t stand to be without a clean pair of underwear and 11% who refuse to be without make-up
  • While over one in five (22%) of Brits admit texting “I love you” on a daily basis, text etiquette is evolving with almost one in ten preferring to say “I love you” to someone for the first time via text and 7% having split up with an ex-partner via text
  • When it comes to voices of comfort, if the world was about to end, almost half (42%) of Brits would make their last phone call to their partner while 19% would call their mum and just 3% would call their dad. Surprisingly 1% of barking mad Brits would pick up the phone to their pet if they only had one last call to make

Pippa Dunn, VP of Propositions for Orange commented: “Tiny Top Ups make it easier for Orange Pay As You Go customers to top up using their loose change. It’s a big change to your small change; and with many people managing their personal finances more closely than ever, Tiny Top Ups will help people who are watching their pennies to stay in touch.”

To celebrate the launch of Tiny Top Ups, Orange is giving away the contents of a huge tube filled with 10p coins to the first person to guess correctly how much is inside. Just follow @ConorfromOrange on Twitter and submit your guess using the hashtag #TinyTopUps.

Furthermore to celebrate the launch, Orange is doubling any Tiny Top Ups made in Orange retail stores across the country during the month of March. So for example, if a customer tops up by 50p, they’ll be given £1 worth of credit.
