Motorola ATRIX 2 Leaked Photos and Details

September 21, 2011 – 11:00 am

Inside the halls of Motorola, the second coming of the ATRIX, also known as the Motorola Edison, is upon us. This follow-up to the first dual-core processor-toting device to hit the shores of the United States has an upgraded dual-core processor (likely a 1.2 or 1.5 GHz OMAP4 chip from Texas Instruments), WONT be an LTE device, and will have an 8-megapixel camera on the back. Will this curved-glass front-having dual-core monster be able to compete with the current onslaught of alternate dual-core Androids? Only time, and AT&T’s selection of said devices, will tell!

This device is also said to be running Android 2.3.5, this being the newest iteration of the most advanced Android handset-based operating system on the market also called Gingerbread, and there’s no current time frame for release. In fact this device hasn’t been officially released in any way shape or form quite yet, with only whispers of the device existing popping up thus far. I think we can pretty much put the rumors to rest given the obvious authenticity of these photos today, seeing that they’re rolling out with a pretty solid new-looking build in them giving us confidence that Motorola will be releasing real info in the very near future.

At the moment we can only see four photos, the back of the device looking just about as interesting as the front – it appearing to have a sort of rubbery looking battery cover and a speaker hole not unlike what we saw with the Photon 4G, while the camera setup isn’t unlike every recent DROID release from Motorola as well. The single Motorola M is present on the back in the center as it should be, and no other carrier marks can be found other than the large AT&T logo on the front at the top. Again also the glass appears to be curved around the edges, not unlike what we’ve just seen on the DROID BIONIC.

Looks like a pretty solid release, wouldn’t you say?

Motorola Pro hitting UK in “mid-late September”

August 26, 2011 – 9:39 am

According to the UK mobile phone retailer Clove, the Motorola Pro has been delayed until “mid-late September.” We have no idea why this is the case and can only speculate Motorola is having hard time with its supply chain.

If you recall, the Motorola Pro is a candybar-shaped, QWERTY keyboard-equipped Android smartphone a la BlackBerry and in that sense should get some love from a number of folks who are transitioning from RIM’s to Google’s platform. In addition, it also comes with a single-core 1GHz processor, 5-megapixel camera with HD video recording capability, HSPA and Wi-Fi connectivity, 3.1-inch HVGA touchscreen and a memory card slot. Android 2.2 Froyo is running the show though it’s safe to bet the Gingerbread update will be released shortly.

As for the price, the unlocked, SIM-free Motorola Pro is at the moment available for 420 GBP (about $694) which is kinda lot. Then again, I’m sure the price will go down the second the device starts selling…

Motorola Defy+ leaves the gym, coming this fall with slightly more muscle

August 16, 2011 – 10:45 am

You’d be hard-pressed to find many phones that look relatively stylish, are thin and light enough to carry comfortably in your pocket, and can hang out underwater for ten minutes. That’s why, we suppose, the Motorola Defy became popular worldwide; it’s difficult to build a device to be a tank without looking like one, and it’s even more tough to do it right. Naturally, when you’ve got a good thing going, it’s ideal to improve upon that model. The Motorola Defy+ aims to do just that — keep the form factor, Gorilla Glass and IP67 certification, but beef up the internal components and throw in better firmware. The new iteration — slated for a Q3 release — will house a single-core 1GHz TI OMAP 3620, Android 2.3.4 with Moto’s latest UI skin (still curiously referred to as MotoBlur) on top, and a 1700mAh battery while the rest of the specs remain the same as its predecessor. No word on specific carrier availability was given, though HelloMoto aims to launch it in Asia, Latin America, and Europe in the fall.

Google buys Motorola Mobility for $12.5bn

August 15, 2011 – 1:03 pm

Google has announced that it is buying Motorola Mobility, in a $12.5bn deal expected to close either by the end of the year or the start of 2012. Described by Google CEO Larry Page as a move to “supercharge the Android ecosystem” the deal will see Motorola operated as a separate business with the company remaining an Android licensee.

“Motorola Mobility’s total commitment to Android has created a natural fit for our two companies. Together, we will create amazing user experiences that supercharge the entire Android ecosystem for the benefit of consumers, partners and developers. I look forward to welcoming Motorolans to our family of Googlers” Larry Page, CEO, Google

According to Google, Motorola’s devotion to Android figured big in the company’s decision to purchase. Back in 2008, Motorola decided to leave its own OS and others like Windows Mobile, and devote resources entirely to building an Android-based range. It seems unlikely that Motorola will now look to Windows Phone, even if Microsoft was to offer them a Nokia-style deal.

“This transaction offers significant value for Motorola Mobility’s stockholders and provides compelling new opportunities for our employees, customers, and partners around the world. We have shared a productive partnership with Google to advance the Android platform, and now through this combination we will be able to do even more to innovate and deliver outstanding mobility solutions across our mobile devices and home businesses” Sanjay Jha, CEO, Motorola Mobility

Page also says that Motorola’s home-entertainment business will feel some refreshed attention, likely to see the first Motorola Google TV boxes arrive among other things. The acquisition will also net Google a significant patent portfolio, one which Motorola suggested recently would put it in a strong position versus other Android OEMs.

“We expect that this combination will enable us to break new ground for the Android ecosystem. However, our vision for Android is unchanged and Google remains firmly committed to Android as an open platform and a vibrant open source community. We will continue to work with all of our valued Android partners to develop and distribute innovative Android-powered devices” Andy Rubin, Senior Vice President of Mobile, Google

Motorola’s MotoActive could be a sports watch and music player combo

July 30, 2011 – 1:11 pm

It seems that Motorola has been sending out surveys to a select few customers to gauge their response to an upcoming product. Unfortunately for tablet or smartphone hopefuls, it will be neither, but instead it appears that Motorola has plans to launch a watch that combines fitness and music together, much like the Nike+ SportWatch.

Based on the design, it is reminiscent of the iPod Nano watches although we’re guessing that this watch will most probably be running on the Android platform. It appears to be able to calculate the amount of calories that you have burnt during your jog as well as keeping track of your heart’s beats-per-minute, which is essential especially for fat loss and stamina building.

A possible name for the device could be called the MotoActive, although at the moment it seems that it’s more of a concept rather than an actual device. A watch that doubles as a music player and fitness monitor – would that be something you could foresee yourself buying?

Motorola Confirms September Droid Bionic Launch

July 29, 2011 – 3:28 pm

Let’s put an end to some of this Motorola Bionic release date guesswork here and now. No less than Motorola CEO Sanjay Jha discussed the Bionic in a call to investors today, stating unequivocally that the Bionic will hit stores this September.

Most recently, we heard rumors that the Bionic wouldn’t get here until September, but were awaiting something a little more official; we’d feel better hearing from Verizon, as well, but otherwise this is about as official as you can get. Earlier, August 4 came up as a potential release date, and as recent as earlier this week we’ve found support for an August release. It’s clear now that there will just be a little longer to wait for the phone.

Sure, Jha didn’t say just when in September the Bionic will be released, so there’s still some mystery remaining. September 1 is one date we’ve heard, and as a Thursday, it makes sense for a Verizon release. Waiting until September will likely put the Bionic up against the next-gen iPhone; let’s hope Motorola knows what it’s doing with the release this time, and we don’t see the Bionic sent back to the drawing board yet again in a bid to stay current.

Motorola Atrix 2: Is This It?

July 29, 2011 – 10:20 am

Photos of a new Atrix-looking Motorola Android phone have sparked Atrix 2 rumors  faster than you can say “Moto”. The overall form factor, size and textured back do look somewhat familiar, but in all fairness, Motorola could brand this with whichever name they want, although “Atrix” was a reasonably successful name.

One thing is for sure, this new device is headed for AT&T as the carrier logo clearly indicates. By looking at the back, it is clear that the 8 Megapixel camera and 1080p video recording resolution are going to be major marketing bullet points.Interestingly enough, the MotoBlur logo (Motorola’s software that handles social networking communications) is absent from this design. On the front, I find the curved display to be interesting looking. It may feel like LG’s Optimus 2X, another high-powered Android Smartphone.

Beyond that, it’s hard to guess what hardware will power the phone and whether or not Motorola will stick with NVIDIA‘s Tegra Series of system on a chip (SoC) – if that is indeed the Atrix 2. What do you think? Does it look like a proper Atrix successor? (Don’t miss our Atrix review btw)

UK Advertising Authority takes issue with Atrix’s ‘world’s most powerful smartphone’ status

July 28, 2011 – 11:05 pm

Just about every day we’re treated to claims of a device being the “world’s first” or “world’s biggest” or, indeed, “world’s fastest.” Typically we file these stories into the “world’s least exciting” folder in our inbox, but in the UK, Motorola’s advertising wing has really been pushing the “world’s most powerful smartphone” angle for the Atrix. Sharp-eyed UK viewers (one of whom was kind enough to write in to us) aren’t buying it, however, complaining to the nation’s Advertising Standards Authority, the ASA. Citing the Galaxy S II, which has a 1.2GHz processor compared to the Atrix’s 1GHz, the ASA has indicated that the complaint will be upheld, as you can see for yourself after the break. Now, it’s looking like Motorola will have to come up with a new way to market the thing over there. We’d suggest “smartphone most likely to run Firefox in an overpriced laptop dock,” but that doesn’t quite have the same ring to it.

Verizon Motorola Droid 3 Unboxing (Video)

July 21, 2011 – 12:50 pm

In 2009, Motorola and Verizon announced the original Droid. A highly popular device which really kicked off, thanks to Verizon’s Droid campaign, a revolution in which not only geeks had Android phones.

The Droid 3 is the new successor to the line, and we have the unboxing for you. It still has the Motorola Droid “tail”, and a slide out keyboard (which seems a little stiff), plus a dual-core processor.

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xMBuhKHqUfc

The Motorola Droid 3 is available from Verizon for $199 with a two year contract.

First impressions

- Feels comfortable in-hand (smoothed corners, soft-touch plastic back)
- Pentile display means some noticeable pixelation
- No 4G

July 14, 2011 – 4:22 pm

Motorola announced a new entry-level Android smartphone for heavy texters – XT316. The device, which obviously builds on top of the Spice XT300 model, is set to hit Hong Kong, Taiwan and Latin America anytime now, with Europe and Asia to follow later in the summer. In Latin America it will be marketed as Motorola SPICE Key, whereas Europeans will know it as Motorola FIRE.

Specs wise, the XT316 sports a 2.8-inch QVGA touchscreen, 3-megapixel camera, HSPA and Wi-Fi connectivity, GPS, compass, accelerometer, light and proximity sensors, 3.5mm headset hack and a microSD memory card slot. In addition, it also comes with the so called Moto Switch user interface that allows users to easily switch from a business-centric to friends-centric mode.
