No BBC iPlayer for Xbox 360 Dashboard update

December 5, 2011 – 6:04 pm

Delayed until 2012

The Xbox 360 Dashboard update hits tomorrow (6 December), but while it comes with plenty of new features and applications for content providers, including 4OD and Demand 5, the much-touted BBC iPlayer won’t be one of them. Yet.

Pocket-lint has been told, in a one-to-one briefing, that the iPlayer app is unlikely to be available on the platform this year, with a 2012 release date much more likely. This is because both parties, Microsoft and the BBC, want the functionality and look of the service to be as good as it possibly can be, and to feature complete integration with the new features offered by the refreshed Metro-style interface:

“We are working with them to deliver their application, probably in 2012,” said Pav Bhardwaj, Xbox Live UK product manager. “We are working to make sure that the app that we deliver for the BBC is the best app that we could possibly deliver. That it is seamless. That it is a great consumer experience. That’s what both the BBC and Microsoft want to deliver.”

However, at least this means that the iPlayer app for Xbox 360 will feature search through voice control, for example:

“That’s what’s most important. Rather than rushing it through, we’re going to make sure it’s a quality app,” he added.

“What’s important about the BBC is that they have such rich content. They’ve got so much content that’s it’s really important that we bring the whole Bing experience, the whole Kinect experience, and the whole search and gesture control functionality correctly to that application. And that it works seamlessly.”

Additionally, the company is working with the other major UK terrestrial broadcaster ITV to bring its ITV Player service to the platform in 2012 too:

“They are one of the partners we’re looking to work with,” Bhardwaj said.

Xbox 360 Dashboard update pictures and hands-on

December 5, 2011 – 9:09 am

Bing search, Metro-styling and more…

Microsoft is set to release its most ambitious Xbox 360 Dashboard update in the six-year-old console’s life to date, and Pocket-lint was invited to a swanky location in the heart of London to test the new features.

Available for download globally from 6 December (tomorrow), the new update is a complete refresh for the user interface and brings the experience in line with the styling of the company’s Windows Phone 7 operating system, and the front end of the forthcoming Windows 8.

It adopts the new Metro-style interface, offering a tiled aesthetic, and splits content categories into tabs that run across the top of the screen. There’s some that are familiar, some not so, and all have been simplified.

Video and Games are still present, obviously, but new to this update are entire categories for Social, Apps, TV and, possibly the standout new feature, Bing. The latter brings about a new way to search for content, whether it be a movie, game, music video or such-like, and it can be accessed or controlled via the joypad or, as we experienced, Kinect – using the microphone and our voice.

In essence, the new Bing search functionality comes across a bit like Apple’s Siri software found on the iPhone 4S, and has already been advertised on UK TV. However, the feature is much more impressive in the flesh. It’s not a fully functioning version of the Bing in-browser search engine, and technically can only find content that’s available to play, download or stream on or to your Xbox 360, but it is revolutionary in the way that you can access it all through speech.

If you have a Kinect plugged into your console, all you have to do is say “Xbox. Bing. Search…” and choose a term. In our demonstration, we performed several searches, including “Xbox. Bing. Search Batman” and “Search Christian Bale”, and both of which came up with plenty of entertainment suggestions. “Batman”, in fact, came up with the game Lego Batman, some of the full length cartoon series and Batman Begins, both available to rent. Additionally, some of the new content partners that come with the update also have content that will be displayed after a Bing search, as well as those that are Microsoft-hosted. And, as more join up, the results will become farther reaching still.

You can search for common titles, actors names and directors, and, like with Siri, half the fun is finding out what works and what doesn’t. The Kinect certainly recognises a hell of a lot of vocal commands, and can now be used throughout the new Dashboard experience too (not just in-game or in a Kinect-specific menu). The same is true for motion control.

The other major non-cosmetic additions to this update come in the form of the aforementioned new content partners. Along with new zones and an easier to understand menu structure, come video apps for Lovefilm, 4OD, blinkbox, Demand 5 (Channel Five’s VOD service), YouTube, Dailymotion and MSN. And, unlike on rival platforms, Microsoft has made a clever move in getting them to ditch their own front ends and user interfaces in favour of the Metro approach. On the PS3, for example, the Lovefilm app looks nothing like Sony’s XrossMediaBar – it uses the same UI as found on Samsung Smart TVs, et al. Not so here.

Instead, while it is the same streamed movie content found on all other Lovefilm streaming platforms, it is a seamless experience, looking like the Xbox’s own new Dashboard with minor colour changes. You’ll still need a streaming-enabled subscription, but you won’t feel like you are leaving the Xbox arena at any time.

The same is true with all of the other content partners, including music service Muzu.tv. Even 4OD shows are offered through a Metro-style interface, although the font has been changed to Channel 4′s.

Remarkably, Pocket-lint was also told that, when it arrives, the BBC iPlayer application will sport the same Metro aesthetic. Seeing as how much the Beeb is protective over its branding and styling, this comes as a massive shock, and much kudos to Microsoft if it manages to pull of such a coup. We were also told that, because of this, and contrary to former rumours, iPlayer will not be available on the Xbox 360 until 2012. The same is true of ITV Player.

The big M won’t end there either. It told us, in our one-to-one briefing, that it plans to release around 15 applications before the end of 2011, and has a healthy roadmap for the introduction of many more throughout the coming year, month-by-month.

Some of those will be social too, although there’s no word at present on Skype integration (considering Microsoft now owns it), but Twitter and Facebook are already present (as before). There will also be new features for social gaming, such as leaving a beacon for friends who are not online. As soon as they log in, that beacon will ask them to join you in a game. Plus, as Gamertag information will be stored in the cloud from now on, rather than locally, you can even log into your account from a different Xbox 360, and play as yourself rather than a guest, with all your achievements and information being accessible.

At this juncture, it’s worth pointing out that some of these new services are only available to Xbox Live Gold members. Silver members still get the new look, the search functionality, and voice and gesture control through a Kinect (if they have one), but will not be able to access a vast amount of the content.

We haven’t been told of an exact time for the Dashboard’s release in the UK, but it is totally on track for this Tuesday. And, given our initial viewing, we reckon it’ll blow your socks off.

Windows 8 public beta slated for release late February

December 2, 2011 – 11:10 am

Word is that the public beta of Windows 8 is apparently slated to be released in late February of 2012, according to sources close to Microsoft. The timing of the public beta launch has been much talked about in tech circles; it’s expected that Windows 8 will be officially released in 2012, but the actual expected date for the completion and shipment of the upcoming Microsoft operating system remains, at the moment, unrevealed. Though, with the knowledge of the public beta release’s time frame, we’ll have a better idea of the overall time frame of the new Windows operating system.

The Next Web was unable to confirm from Microsoft precisely what will be in the public beta of Windows 8, the feature set not yet released nor specified. But it will most likely be decided by the engineers working on the project deciding which parts are release-ready. So, no information has been imparted yet on the email function currently missing from the developer preview of Windows 8, and if it will be in the beta in late February.

Though February is a bit a later than some of us were hoping for a pubic beta release, Windows 8 seems to be making continuing progress, and assuming that Microsoft hits this milestone, the official version of Windows 8 should be on track for its expected third quarter launch next year. Have any SlashGear readers downloaded or used the Windows 8 developer preview yet? What are your thoughts? Feel free to leave them in the comment section below.

Microsoft sells nearly 1 million Xbox 360s in record week in Xbox history

November 30, 2011 – 5:55 pm

The aging Xbox 360 just recorded the biggest sales week in its not-quite-venerable history, moving nearly one million units over the seven day period, specifically selling more than 960,000 consoles in the U.S. during the week of Black Friday. For a console that’s entering the seventh year of its product lifestyle, that’s one very impressive statistic. Of course, Black Friday and Cyber Monday are the pivotal factors here, but the numbers themselves are still stellar, to say the very least.

According to Microsoft:

· Xbox 360 sold more than 960,000 consoles in the U.S. alone, with more than 800,000 sold within a period of 24 hours.

· More than 750,000 Kinect for Xbox 360 sensors were sold in the U.S. – standalone and bundled.

Microsoft’s Xbox 360 has been the top-selling game console for nearly every month in the last year, mostly driven by the breakout success of the Kinect, the motion-sensing entertainment device that has rekindled interest in Xbox games (those that support the Kinect). Furthermore, according to Microsoft, in addition to games on Dec. 6th, the next generation of television entertainment will begin with the availability of a new Xbox 360 experience, and the launch of the first group of custom entertainment apps on Xbox LIVE. “By the end of the year, nearly 40 world-leading TV and entertainment providers, including Comcast and HBO GO, will be available on Xbox LIVE.”

The momentum of both the Kinect and the coming new app platform is what Microsoft expects to ride into its next product cycle, most probable to debut at E3 in 2012. That also means that the Xbox 360 is near the end of its lifecycle, but is stil steadily churning out the sales. If these stats continue, Microsoft should be on track to have huge holiday sales next month. Readers, what do you think of the Kinect and upcoming app platform, and the new Xbox set to debut soon?

Developer teases voice control of Zune, using PC and Windows Phone (video)

November 30, 2011 – 9:45 am

The great thinkers of the world have long known a secret that we’re now happy to disclose: it’s not necessity that’s the mother invention, but rather laziness. Fortunately, expending a great deal of effort on a project — simply to perform a task effortlessly — sometimes brings very cool results. A concept app known as ZuneVoice easily passes muster in this realm, which is used to control Zune software on the PC with only a standard microphone and spoken commands. As you can see in the demo video, its creator, keyboardp, is able to play individual songs, issue commands such a “pause” or “next song”, and even display full-screen music videos from YouTube. The developer even crafted an app for his Lumia 800 known as PhoneZune, which serves as a remote control for times when he’s away from the box. Neither application is yet publicly available, though feedback is welcome. Next, we’re told to expect Kinect integration. Perhaps one day, these gems will see the light of day.

Xbox 360 revamp brings Kinect skills and TV on 6 December

November 24, 2011 – 1:36 pm

The annual Xbox 360 dashboard update is a biggie this year, packing in greater Kinect control and a stack of new TV on demand services, and now we know exactly when it’s coming.

Microsoft confirmed that the update, which has been in beta for a limited number of users since 10 November, will roll out to all on 6 December. The update features a new design based on Windows Phone’s Metro UI, and lets you control the Xbox completely via Kinect, share via Facebook and save your games in the cloud.

The Xbox 360 dashboard update will also bring with it an array of new TV channels to compliment Sky Player and Zune. Chief among them is Lovefilm (Which can be controlled using Bing voice search and Kinect), but others include 4oD and possibly even a partnership with the BBC – likely BBC iPlayer.

We’ve contacted Lovefilm to confirm if its service will be available on 6 December with the Xbox 360 dashboard update and will confirm when we hear back.

Kinect for Windows PCs moves tech to new level in 2012

November 23, 2011 – 9:32 am

Optimised hardware

Microsoft Kinect, the no-hands gaming peripheral for Xbox 360, is to see a move over to Windows PCs come early 2012, and in the process it’ll be gaining new hardware improvements.

We’ve seen the Kinect on a PC many times before with hackers porting the device to use in a variety of weird and wonderful ways, however now that a dedicated piece of kit is coming, this kind of innovation should become far more prevalent.

In fairness we’ve known about the upcoming launch of Kinect for PC for some time, but never had a date stamped on it. The CEO of Microsoft, Steve Ballmer, letting the cat out of the bag at CES 2011, saying: “We’re trying to move beyond gaming – to include the world of socialisation movies, TV and music – and we’re trying to make the whole experience accessible to everybody in the family, not just the traditional gamers.

“It’s all stuff that you could integrate into a multitude of devices, whether it’s phones or it’s PCs, or anything that requires some sort of input.”

Improvements to the dedicated Kinect for PC will include a shorter USB cable and dongle which will allow for improved coupling with other USB devices, whilst an improvement to the depth camera will enable the Kinect to track objects as close as 50cm in front of the device without losing accuracy.

The new close-up limit will be 40cm with a “graceful degradation” down to that lower limit. This “near mode” will deliver a new range of close-up applications.

However, one of the most important aspects of the update is the way Microsoft is continuing to support developers, “giving licensed customers access to ongoing updates in both speech and human tracking (where Microsoft has been investing for years), in addition to providing fully supported Kinect hardware for Windows.” Confirming its commitment to developing its natural user interface (NUI).

This coupled with its open SDK released earlier in the year should ensure that the device will see continued interest and uptake. Microsoft hasn’t put a foot wrong with this one. Next step: Kinect on your mobile phone.

Revamped Xbox 360 dashboard to launch on December 6th, Microsoft confirms

November 22, 2011 – 9:22 am

Earlier this month, Microsoft announced that its Xbox 360 dashboard would be getting an upgrade “in the coming days.” Today, the company has clarified that statement, declaring that the revamped interface will launch on December 6th. As we’ve previously noted, the update promises to bring deeper Kinect integration (including sharper voice recognition capabilities), Facebook sharing mechanisms, and a cleaner interface. Redmond also says that the fall cleanup will introduce “a wealth of new content,” including live TV, music and movies, available for streaming. For now, the dashboard is still in beta, though it certainly won’t be long before the masses get their hands on it.

Nokia to release Windows 8 tablets this June, top drawer Lumia in the works?

November 16, 2011 – 9:28 am

There’s some intriguing Nokia news coming out of France this morning, thanks to Paul Amsellem, head of the company’s Gallic outpost. In a recent interview with Parisian daily Les Echos, Amsellem described Nokia’s aspirations to regain some of the market share it’s lost within France, explaining that his firm is squarely targeting the 60 percent of French users who currently don’t own a smartphone. More salient, however, is what the exec had to say about Nokia’s plans for future releases. According to Amsellem, Espoo will unveil a new Windows 8 equipped tablet by June 2012.

Unfortunately, that’s about all he had to say on the subject, but it’s certainly enough of a carrot to raise our heart rates — as are Amsellem’s comments on the Lumia 800, which hit French stores yesterday. Comparing the handset to a BMW 5 series, the chief went on to say that Nokia “will soon have a full range with a 7 Series and 3 Series.” He didn’t elaborate much on this analogy, though its implication is rather self-evident — new Lumia cousins may be in the works. Of course, it remains to be seen when and if the company will expand upon its Lumia line, though we’ll definitely be keeping our yeux on it.
