Vooma Peel PG92 case brings dual-SIM capability, added appeal to your iPhone 4, 4S

November 9, 2011 – 9:25 am

Vooma’s new Peel PG92 handset case isn’t the first to bring dual-SIM capability to the iPhone 4, but it may be the most elegant. The accessory, which has yet to be released, essentially consists of an extra battery pack and an unlocked SIM slot. All you have to do is download Vooma’s customized app to your jailbroken iPhone 4 or 4S, strap on the Peel PG92, and insert your spare SIM card into the case (judging from the photos, it appears that the device is tailored for mini-SIM cards, rather than micro-SIM). Once that’s taken care of, you’ll be able to place calls via the app and external SIM, using a dialer interface that’s only slightly different from what Apple offers. No word yet on pricing or availability, but you can sign up for more information at Voom’s website, linked below. Otherwise, check out the coverage from our friends at TechCrunch, who managed to get their hands on a pre-release model.

Siri for iPhone 4: under review at Apple?

November 7, 2011 – 6:17 pm

A few days ago, some very interesting rumors concerning Siri, Apple’s new voice assistant service for the iPhone 4S surfaced. According to the folks at jailbreaknation.com who claims to have a source close to Apple – the company is said to be testing Siri on devices other than the iPhone 4S, namely the iPhone 4 (and the iPad 2?). Apparently Apple has given its employees access to a special software build that brings Siri to older devices (in case you didn’t already know, at the moment Siri is (officially) only available on the iPhone 4S) and if testing goes well, we should see Siri on non-4S devices in the form of an update in the near future.

If these rumors turn out to be true, it looks like Apple could be blurring the line between the iPhone 4 and the 4S – since Siri is one of its main ”upgrades”, with another one being the improved camera. People with an iPhone 4 wouldn’t see the need to upgrade, for Siri functionality, but then again consumers weren’t going to upgrade just for the voice assistant anyway. Would this lead to increased iPhone 4 sales (since it’s more affordable)? What do you think?

iPhone 4 mod makes logo glow

September 13, 2011 – 12:44 pm

You can be more or less sure that you will be the toast of the crowd once you successfully implement this particular mod for your iPhone 4 – that is, to get the Apple logo at the back glowing. After all, this would by far help you stand out from the rest, even though others decide to spray paint their iPhones in all sorts of zany colors and designs. British iDevice repair service iPatch is the brain behind this mod, where it will let the Apple logo light up whenever the screen does, similar to how the MacBook’s Apple logo lights up when opened.

They definitely aren’t going to let go of this secret, with the director of iPatch saying that it is “a complete secret” (like Coca Cola’s recipe, perhaps?) and “very tricky to replicate. It’s not something that could be done at home without specialist equipment.” Guess budding enthusiasts might want to give this a pass, and hand their smartphone over to iPatch to get the job done. It takes several hours for the entire mod to be completed and work fine, and at least you are able to choose the color of your glowing Apple.

Bear in mind that when you trick out your iPhone 4, it will void its warranty, but you can always reverse the process if you decide a glowing Apple logo is no longer your cup of tea. Folks living in the UK will have to fork out between £50 and £100 to get the job done, and others living overseas can mail their precious handset in for modding.

8GB iPhone 4 coming soon?

August 24, 2011 – 1:15 pm

Is this the rumoured cheap iPhone?

Apple is poised to release an 8GB version of the iPhone 4, according to a Reuters report that cites “two people with knowledge of the matter”.

With all the iPhone 5 rumours flying around, there has been a growing murmur that Apple may also release a cheaper iPhone at the same time.

And whilst Pocket-lint can’t see Apple cheapening the brand by scaling down the spec sheet, it is reasonable to accept that the Cupertino company may offer a cut-price iPhone 4 with less storage to sit alongside the next-gen iPhone.

After all, unlike the original iPad which was effectively killed off when its sequel came along, Apple has continued to offer the 3GS alongside the iPhone 4. So a scaled-down fourth-gen iPhone would sit nicely in the device hierarchy.

It’s a much more realistic prospect than Jobs taking to the stage, announcing a new phone with shiny bells and whistles and then offering an entirely new, but inferior, model at the same time.

Reuters’ sources claimed the 8GB flash memory was in production in Korea and one source also waded in to the ever growing iPhone 5 (or 4S) rumour pile with promises of “a bigger touch screen, better antenna and an 8-megapixel camera”.

An official Apple announcement is expected in September. Expect a few more twists and turns on the rumour path before then.

Apple orders production of 15 million iPhone 5s

July 5, 2011 – 12:58 pm

Still coming September

Taiwanese production plant Pegatron Technology has reportedly received a manufacturing order from Apple for 15 million iPhone 5s. The plant, which is best known for building notebooks, was a major supplier of iPhone 4s, and if sources are to be believed, production is on schedule for a September launch.

The same sources also re-affirm rumours that the forthcoming iPhone 5 with be more like an iPhone 4S – it will be a fractional update on the iPhone 4, possibly with a new case design (and, obviously, sporting iOS 5), but with few other surprises in its bowels.

Pegatron Technology formerly supplied four million CDMA iPhone 4s, so it has been working with Apple for a while, but if this new report is true, this is the largest volume of handsets it has ever been commissioned to build.

The company itself declined to comment about its partnership with Apple, or its involvement with the iPhone 5.

Apple releasing two iPhone models in September?

June 28, 2011 – 12:25 pm

Is the next iPhone going to be called the iPhone 5, or the iPhone 4S? It depends on which Apple rumors you believe–some think that the new smartphone will be completely overhauled with a new design and internals, others think that it will just be a beefed-up iPhone 4. However, one analyst thinks that there might be two models on the horizon.

CNN Money reports:

In a note issued early Monday, Deutsche Bank’s Chris Whitmore is telling clients to expect both — an iPhone 5 and an iPhone 4S.

“With Nokia and RIMM struggling,” he writes, “the time is right for Apple to aggressively penetrate the mid range smart-phone market (i.e. $300-500 category) to dramatically expand its [total addressable market] and market share.”

The idea is that the iPhone 5 will be the new model, the next iteration of the Apple smartphone, and the 4S model will be a slightly more powerful version of the current model intended to sell for budget-conscious users. It’s not unusual for an older version of the Apple smartphone to be sold at budget prices when a new model comes out (i.e. the 8GB iPhone 3GS for $49 when the new iPhone 4 was released).

It’s an opportunity for Apple to hold a wider range of the market – smartphone users who want the latest and greatest, and those who simply want the conveniences of a smartphone without the hefty price tag to come along with it.

The rumors swirling around the iPhone 5 have ranged from the processor it will use, a new display, a radical new design, the types of flash units its camera will employ and even its size. An infographic released last week does a nice job of rounding up some of the rumors and giving each one a percentage of likelihood.

If the new Apple smartphone is really coming this fall, we’re just two short months away from learning whether any of these rumors hold water, or if they’re just as wild as they’ve ever been in the past.

Gooapple phone combines the best of both worlds

June 10, 2011 – 12:10 pm

Every now and then we’ll come across a Shanzai device that proves interesting enough to write about and today the Gooapple 3G is that one device. At first glance, the phone looks just like an iPhone 4, with measurements and even the width of the phone copied down to a T. It even has a thickness of 9.3mm and fits most cases made for the iPhone 4! If that’s not a good copy, then I don’t know what is.

Now here’s the interesting part – it runs Android 2.2 Froyo that’s skinned to look just like iOS. Everything including the home screen, keyboard, lock screen, dialer, message app and more looks just like iOS! And you get the benefits of the Android OS i.e. the notifications bar. One of the most convincing iOS imitators I’ve ever seen on an Android phone.

The phone is even missing the back and menu button at the bottom of the device. No word on how it’ll run third party apps or if it even has the ability to download apps from the Android Market, but judging by the video demonstration – it looks pretty impressive. Check it out and let us know what you think of the phone. Would you buy a device like the Gooapple?

Video of iOS 5 on an iPhone 3GS and a 4 side by side

June 10, 2011 – 9:58 am

The folks at AppleRumors Italia did a side-by-side video comparison of iOS 5 on both the iPhone 3GS and the iPhone 4. As you can see in the video, the two models perform similarly with only a small amount of lag apparent on the iPhone 3GS during certain tasks, like loading a complex web page.

The biggest difference is the lack of some features, like HDR and photo editing, on the older iPhone 3GS. Though this is only one video, the results are encouraging for those still rocking a third-generation iPhone.

iOS 5 Demonstation (Video)

June 9, 2011 – 3:39 pm

In this “covert” video we demonstrate the new features of iOS 5 which Apple states will be coming to the iPhone 4 (GSM/CDMA), iPhone 3GS, iPod Touch, iPad and iPad 2, and of course what everyone is waiting for the iPhone 5/4S.

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DGwZ3G4f0Xk

Since this is the beta version some features will probably change with the final release due out in late summer or early autumn. Some new apps included are Newsstand, Videos, Music, Reminders, and a few more. The biggest changes are seen in the settings, widgets, notifications, and iCloud integration. Stay tuned for more information and videos of future builds.

PhoneSuit is slimmest battery case yet

June 3, 2011 – 10:09 am

Thin is in – otherwise there won’t be products like the Ultrabook announced, no? Take a look at the MacBook Air – that is one undeniably slim product, too, so why should battery cases be the exception? Of course, it is an engineering marvel to see the PhoneSuit Elite battery case for iPhone 4 revealed, since it would mean engineers having done a bang up job in cramming in as much capacity as possible into a battery this thin.

The PhoneSuit Elite is touted to be the thinnest, fastest charging iPhone 4 battery case in the market, offering “over 100% power”. Now, we’re not too sure what do they mean by that, unless they are referring to doubling up your iPhone’s existing battery supply. Incorporating the latest in advanced technology that includes an efficient 2100mah lithium-ion polymer battery cell, this unique full protection case measures a mere 17mm (0.67 inch) thin.

With Quick Charge, it will offer you double the industry standard power output when juicing up a thirsty iPhone 4, taking less than 2 hours to do so. With an innovative 5 point LED battery meter, you should no longer have any more excuse that your iPhone 4 has no more battery. The PhoneSuit Elite will retail for $79.95 if you are interested.
