PS Vita’s weak sales prompt price cuts in Japan

January 4, 2012 – 3:14 pm

Retailers in Japan have begun unofficially slashing prices on Sony’s PS Vita next-gen portable gaming device after disappointing sales continued through the holiday. The PS Vita debuted in Japan last month to initial sales of 321,000 units in the first two days. However, that number quickly sunk to a paltry 72,479 units by the second week, a very low figure compared to the second-week sales of rival Nintendo’s 3DS back in February of last year and is still flying off shelves.

The discounts being offered on the PS Vita are said to be as much as 20 percent, but only on the more expensive 3G version of the device. Apparently, the 3G version isn’t moving and it’s understandable given the added cost for the 3G capability itself plus the extra cellular data plan that would be required. Here in the US, that means signing up with AT&T for either a $14.99 per month plan for 250MB or a $25 per month plan for 2GB.

The PS Vita is set to debut stateside starting February 22 along with the release of several game titles for the device. GameStop has already posted pricing and arrival estimates for the PS Vita and its accessories, listing the WiFi-only version at $249.99 and the WiFi-plus-3G version at $299.99. Games are priced at around $39.99. It’ll be interesting to see how the PS Vita is received here and if we’ll also be seeing a price cut.

PlayStation Vita launches in Japan, shifts 321,400 units in two days

December 21, 2011 – 10:07 am

Kaz Hirai probably had a sleepless weekend as he and the team waited for the two-day sales figures for Sony’s PlayStation Vita. He can probably relax a little, knowing that 321,400 of the things were exchanged for cold, hard cash in the retail outlets of Japan. In comparison, Nintendo’s 3DS sold 50,000 more units but sales soon stalled — only to be rescued with a hefty price cut. Of course, now the company has to ensure that the performance issues that early-adopters have been facing are resolved — we’d hate to experience the same teething trouble when it arrives over here in February.

OnLive hits iOS and Android with phone/tablet cloud gaming

December 8, 2011 – 10:32 am

OnLive has launched its smartphone and tablet cloud gaming apps for iPhone, iPad and Android, bringing console-class gaming to WiFi and 3G/4G mobile devices with an optional wireless controller. This updated control pad uses what OnLive calls “adaptive wireless” to automatically find the best connection with your TV, PC, Mac, Blu-ray player, smartphone or tablet, and will go on sale on December 9 at $49.99/£39.99. Check out the video demo after the cut.

The iOS and Android apps themselves are free, though you’ll of course need to pay OnLive for the privilege of using the games. If you’re on a budget, though, you can bypass the wireless controller and just stick with the touchscreen on your phone or slate, though only 25 titles actually support that method of input; if you want to use most os OnLive’s near-200 games, you’ll need that controller.

Up to four controllers can be paired with a PC using a bundled USB adapter, along with a Bluetooth headset for in-game voice communication. It’s powered either by a pair of AA batteries or an OnLive rechargeable pack, which rejuices via a USB connection and is apparently good for up to 36hrs of play.

Those gaming on their phone or tablet can play against others using their PC, Mac or the OnLive Microconsole itself, and all the usual social and “Brag Clip” features are present. Touch-supporting games include L.A. Noire, LEGO Harry Potter: Years 1-4 and 5-7, and Defense Grid Gold.

Grand Theft Auto III releasing on Android, iOS on Dec. 15th for $4.99

December 7, 2011 – 8:12 pm

October certainly was a big month for Rockstar Games as the announcement of Grand Theft Auto III coming to Android and iOS was received by many a squeal of delight by mobile gamers everywhere. After going  hands-on with the game at New York Comic-Con later that week, I can tell you that we all have a very good reason to be excited about the game, especially now that Rockstar has officially announced the game will be hitting both Android and iOS next week.

If I had to guess on a price point for GTA III, I easily could see people paying $10, maybe $15 for the game on their mobile device, which is why I’m befuddled but also excited Rockstar is releasing the game for only $4.99. When you consider how much content is in the game, as well as the fact that you can bring the GTA III experience with you wherever you go, then you’ll hopefully realize this is a complete steal.

Rockstar has also updated the list of phones and tablets Grand Theft Auto III will run on next week. If you’re device isn’t listed, don’t worry as Rockstar has said they’ll continue working on supporting more devices in the coming months.

Apple iOS Devices: iPad 1 & 2, iPhone 4 & 4S, iPod touch 4th Generation

Android Phones: HTC Rezound, LG Optimus 2x, Motorola Atrix 4G, Motorola Droid X2, Motorola Photon 4G, Samsung Galaxy R, T-Mobile G2x

Android Tablets: Acer Iconia, Asus Eee Pad Transformer, Dell Streak 7, LG Optimus Pad, Motorola Xoom, Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 and 10.1, Sony Tablet S, Toshiba Thrive

iOS gamers should take note that Rockstar has worked on supporting the original iPad and iPhone 4, which is a welcomed addition as it was originally said only the iPad 2 & iPhone 4S would be supported from the get-go. As for Android gamers, the list of sporadicly supported devices shouldn’t surprise us as developers tend to support more of the latest and greatest devices than some of the older ones. If you’re phone isn’t supported, don’t forget that you could always purchase an Android tablet, iPad, or iPod touch in order to experience the goodness of Grand Theft Auto III when it’s released next week.

OnLive console hits stores: The ultimate stocking filler

December 6, 2011 – 5:15 pm

Looking for a great gadget Christmas idea? You could do worse than the OnLive micro console, which brings the cloud powered game streaming service to your TV. It’s been available in the UK since September, but is now making a move on the high street: retailer Game will sell the device in the run up to the 25th.

MCV reports that chain Game will sell the tiny OnLive set top box in its stores before the end of the year, while other retailers will begin flogging it in 2012. OnLive declined to comment when asked by Electricpig for an exact date.

It’s a surprise move, given that OnLive games can’t be bought in shops, and high street retailer disinterest killed the download only Sony PSPgo. But it’s an interesting fit: Game says it will sell top up vouchers for the service in store, and use OnLive to provide playable demos on its website.

Of course, it’s not necessarily the best way to pick up the excellent £69.99 OnLive micro console: the company, which is backed by BT and HTC amongst other investors, frequently gives them away with purchases of games on it servers. But it could be the shot of adrenalin the ailing bricks and mortar store, which saw declining sales of 6.7 percent in 2010-11 needs to survive.

No BBC iPlayer for Xbox 360 Dashboard update

December 5, 2011 – 6:04 pm

Delayed until 2012

The Xbox 360 Dashboard update hits tomorrow (6 December), but while it comes with plenty of new features and applications for content providers, including 4OD and Demand 5, the much-touted BBC iPlayer won’t be one of them. Yet.

Pocket-lint has been told, in a one-to-one briefing, that the iPlayer app is unlikely to be available on the platform this year, with a 2012 release date much more likely. This is because both parties, Microsoft and the BBC, want the functionality and look of the service to be as good as it possibly can be, and to feature complete integration with the new features offered by the refreshed Metro-style interface:

“We are working with them to deliver their application, probably in 2012,” said Pav Bhardwaj, Xbox Live UK product manager. “We are working to make sure that the app that we deliver for the BBC is the best app that we could possibly deliver. That it is seamless. That it is a great consumer experience. That’s what both the BBC and Microsoft want to deliver.”

However, at least this means that the iPlayer app for Xbox 360 will feature search through voice control, for example:

“That’s what’s most important. Rather than rushing it through, we’re going to make sure it’s a quality app,” he added.

“What’s important about the BBC is that they have such rich content. They’ve got so much content that’s it’s really important that we bring the whole Bing experience, the whole Kinect experience, and the whole search and gesture control functionality correctly to that application. And that it works seamlessly.”

Additionally, the company is working with the other major UK terrestrial broadcaster ITV to bring its ITV Player service to the platform in 2012 too:

“They are one of the partners we’re looking to work with,” Bhardwaj said.

Xbox 360 Dashboard update pictures and hands-on

December 5, 2011 – 9:09 am

Bing search, Metro-styling and more…

Microsoft is set to release its most ambitious Xbox 360 Dashboard update in the six-year-old console’s life to date, and Pocket-lint was invited to a swanky location in the heart of London to test the new features.

Available for download globally from 6 December (tomorrow), the new update is a complete refresh for the user interface and brings the experience in line with the styling of the company’s Windows Phone 7 operating system, and the front end of the forthcoming Windows 8.

It adopts the new Metro-style interface, offering a tiled aesthetic, and splits content categories into tabs that run across the top of the screen. There’s some that are familiar, some not so, and all have been simplified.

Video and Games are still present, obviously, but new to this update are entire categories for Social, Apps, TV and, possibly the standout new feature, Bing. The latter brings about a new way to search for content, whether it be a movie, game, music video or such-like, and it can be accessed or controlled via the joypad or, as we experienced, Kinect – using the microphone and our voice.

In essence, the new Bing search functionality comes across a bit like Apple’s Siri software found on the iPhone 4S, and has already been advertised on UK TV. However, the feature is much more impressive in the flesh. It’s not a fully functioning version of the Bing in-browser search engine, and technically can only find content that’s available to play, download or stream on or to your Xbox 360, but it is revolutionary in the way that you can access it all through speech.

If you have a Kinect plugged into your console, all you have to do is say “Xbox. Bing. Search…” and choose a term. In our demonstration, we performed several searches, including “Xbox. Bing. Search Batman” and “Search Christian Bale”, and both of which came up with plenty of entertainment suggestions. “Batman”, in fact, came up with the game Lego Batman, some of the full length cartoon series and Batman Begins, both available to rent. Additionally, some of the new content partners that come with the update also have content that will be displayed after a Bing search, as well as those that are Microsoft-hosted. And, as more join up, the results will become farther reaching still.

You can search for common titles, actors names and directors, and, like with Siri, half the fun is finding out what works and what doesn’t. The Kinect certainly recognises a hell of a lot of vocal commands, and can now be used throughout the new Dashboard experience too (not just in-game or in a Kinect-specific menu). The same is true for motion control.

The other major non-cosmetic additions to this update come in the form of the aforementioned new content partners. Along with new zones and an easier to understand menu structure, come video apps for Lovefilm, 4OD, blinkbox, Demand 5 (Channel Five’s VOD service), YouTube, Dailymotion and MSN. And, unlike on rival platforms, Microsoft has made a clever move in getting them to ditch their own front ends and user interfaces in favour of the Metro approach. On the PS3, for example, the Lovefilm app looks nothing like Sony’s XrossMediaBar – it uses the same UI as found on Samsung Smart TVs, et al. Not so here.

Instead, while it is the same streamed movie content found on all other Lovefilm streaming platforms, it is a seamless experience, looking like the Xbox’s own new Dashboard with minor colour changes. You’ll still need a streaming-enabled subscription, but you won’t feel like you are leaving the Xbox arena at any time.

The same is true with all of the other content partners, including music service Muzu.tv. Even 4OD shows are offered through a Metro-style interface, although the font has been changed to Channel 4′s.

Remarkably, Pocket-lint was also told that, when it arrives, the BBC iPlayer application will sport the same Metro aesthetic. Seeing as how much the Beeb is protective over its branding and styling, this comes as a massive shock, and much kudos to Microsoft if it manages to pull of such a coup. We were also told that, because of this, and contrary to former rumours, iPlayer will not be available on the Xbox 360 until 2012. The same is true of ITV Player.

The big M won’t end there either. It told us, in our one-to-one briefing, that it plans to release around 15 applications before the end of 2011, and has a healthy roadmap for the introduction of many more throughout the coming year, month-by-month.

Some of those will be social too, although there’s no word at present on Skype integration (considering Microsoft now owns it), but Twitter and Facebook are already present (as before). There will also be new features for social gaming, such as leaving a beacon for friends who are not online. As soon as they log in, that beacon will ask them to join you in a game. Plus, as Gamertag information will be stored in the cloud from now on, rather than locally, you can even log into your account from a different Xbox 360, and play as yourself rather than a guest, with all your achievements and information being accessible.

At this juncture, it’s worth pointing out that some of these new services are only available to Xbox Live Gold members. Silver members still get the new look, the search functionality, and voice and gesture control through a Kinect (if they have one), but will not be able to access a vast amount of the content.

We haven’t been told of an exact time for the Dashboard’s release in the UK, but it is totally on track for this Tuesday. And, given our initial viewing, we reckon it’ll blow your socks off.

Microsoft sells nearly 1 million Xbox 360s in record week in Xbox history

November 30, 2011 – 5:55 pm

The aging Xbox 360 just recorded the biggest sales week in its not-quite-venerable history, moving nearly one million units over the seven day period, specifically selling more than 960,000 consoles in the U.S. during the week of Black Friday. For a console that’s entering the seventh year of its product lifestyle, that’s one very impressive statistic. Of course, Black Friday and Cyber Monday are the pivotal factors here, but the numbers themselves are still stellar, to say the very least.

According to Microsoft:

· Xbox 360 sold more than 960,000 consoles in the U.S. alone, with more than 800,000 sold within a period of 24 hours.

· More than 750,000 Kinect for Xbox 360 sensors were sold in the U.S. – standalone and bundled.

Microsoft’s Xbox 360 has been the top-selling game console for nearly every month in the last year, mostly driven by the breakout success of the Kinect, the motion-sensing entertainment device that has rekindled interest in Xbox games (those that support the Kinect). Furthermore, according to Microsoft, in addition to games on Dec. 6th, the next generation of television entertainment will begin with the availability of a new Xbox 360 experience, and the launch of the first group of custom entertainment apps on Xbox LIVE. “By the end of the year, nearly 40 world-leading TV and entertainment providers, including Comcast and HBO GO, will be available on Xbox LIVE.”

The momentum of both the Kinect and the coming new app platform is what Microsoft expects to ride into its next product cycle, most probable to debut at E3 in 2012. That also means that the Xbox 360 is near the end of its lifecycle, but is stil steadily churning out the sales. If these stats continue, Microsoft should be on track to have huge holiday sales next month. Readers, what do you think of the Kinect and upcoming app platform, and the new Xbox set to debut soon?

Xbox 360 revamp brings Kinect skills and TV on 6 December

November 24, 2011 – 1:36 pm

The annual Xbox 360 dashboard update is a biggie this year, packing in greater Kinect control and a stack of new TV on demand services, and now we know exactly when it’s coming.

Microsoft confirmed that the update, which has been in beta for a limited number of users since 10 November, will roll out to all on 6 December. The update features a new design based on Windows Phone’s Metro UI, and lets you control the Xbox completely via Kinect, share via Facebook and save your games in the cloud.

The Xbox 360 dashboard update will also bring with it an array of new TV channels to compliment Sky Player and Zune. Chief among them is Lovefilm (Which can be controlled using Bing voice search and Kinect), but others include 4oD and possibly even a partnership with the BBC – likely BBC iPlayer.

We’ve contacted Lovefilm to confirm if its service will be available on 6 December with the Xbox 360 dashboard update and will confirm when we hear back.
