Sprint 4G spreads: 48 areas now with WiMAX

August 2, 2010 – 1:58 pm

We already know that Sprint are looking to 4G to salve their fortunes, and so news that the WiMAX network is spreading can only be a good thing for investors and for data-hungry users.  Fresh to feel the warm touch of 4G on their skin are Modesto and Stockton, California; Jacksonville, Florida, Wilmington, Delaware; and Grand Rapids, Michigan.

That now makes forty-eight metropolitan areas with WiMAX coverage – the full list is in the press release below – and Sprint reckon subscribers will see up to ten-times the performance of a regular 3G connection.

Now it’s just a case of getting the supplies of handsets that use the 4G network to cater for demand; Sprint CEO Dan Hesse has already admitted that shortages of flagship devices such as the HTC EVO 4G have undermined the carrier’s advantage over rivals.  In the meantime, HTC has announced plans to use Super LCD displays alongside AMOLED panels so as to alleviate the bottleneck.

Press Release:

Sprint Launches 4G Coverage in Delaware, Florida and Michigan and Extends 4G Coverage in California

Modesto, Calif., Stockton, Calif., Jacksonville, Fla., Wilmington, Del., and Grand Rapids, Mich., Launched Today
OVERLAND PARK, Kan., Aug 02, 2010 (BUSINESS WIRE) –

Today, Sprint (NYSE:S) unveiled 4G service to populous areas of California, Delaware, Florida and Michigan. With today’s launches of Modesto, Calif., Stockton, Calif., Jacksonville, Fla., Wilmington, Del., and Grand Rapids, Mich., Sprint boasts 48 metropolitan areas enabled with the new mobile broadband service, which allows for Internet traffic at super fast speeds. Unlike competitors, Sprint is the first national wireless carrier to actually launch wireless 4G technology in cities across the country. Wilmington, Jacksonville and Grand Rapids are the first cities in Delaware, Florida and Michigan to offer 4G service.

With 4G, Sprint customers experience fast mobile downloads, streaming video without the lag, and turbo-charged Web browsing. This new wireless technology boasts download speeds up to 10 times faster than 3G.1 Users can video chat with friends and family via the popular HTC EVO(TM) 4G, America’s first 3G/4G wireless smartphone. And in the near future, Sprint customers will be able to purchase Samsung Epic(TM) 4G, the company’s second 4G enabled smartphone.

With the Overdrive(TM) 3G/4G Mobile Hotspot by Sierra Wireless, users can create a 4G hotspot on the road or at home. With the Sprint Free Guarantee, customers can try 4G for 30 days and if they are not satisfied, they can cancel service and have the opportunity to be fully reimbursed.2 Sprint also offers simplicity and savings vs. competitors with Everything Data plans, which include unlimited Web, texting and calling while on the Sprint network for one low price.

“Sprint customers are the first in the country to use 4G with either a smartphone like HTC EVO or one of Sprint’s other 4G devices like the 3G/4G Overdrive Hotspot to wirelessly connect a laptop to the Internet,” said Matt Carter, president of 4G, Sprint. “Later this year, Sprint will launch Boston, Miami, New York and Los Angeles, enabling millions more to harness this powerful new service.”

As summer travel continues, people will find that 4G is available in many markets across the country: California – Merced, Modesto, Stockton and Visalia; Delaware – Wilmington; Florida – Jacksonville; Georgia – Atlanta and Milledgeville; Hawaii – Honolulu and Maui; Idaho – Boise; Illinois – Chicago; Maryland – Baltimore; Michigan – Grand Rapids; Missouri – Kansas City and St. Louis; New York – Rochester and Syracuse; Nevada – Las Vegas; North Carolina – Charlotte, Greensboro (along with High Point and Winston-Salem), Raleigh (along with Cary, Chapel Hill and Durham); Oregon – Eugene, Portland and Salem; Pennsylvania – Harrisburg, Lancaster, Philadelphia, Reading and York; Texas – Abilene, Amarillo, Austin, Corpus Christi, Dallas/Fort Worth, Houston, Killeen/Temple, Lubbock, Midland/Odessa, San Antonio, Waco and Wichita Falls; Utah – Salt Lake City; Virginia – Richmond; Washington – Bellingham, Seattle, Tri-Cities and Yakima. For more information, visit www.sprint.com/4G.

Sprint is delivering the power of 4G as the majority shareholder of Clearwire, the independent company that is building the WiMAX network.

Sprint reports $760 million net loss for Q2, slightly less than expected

July 29, 2010 – 1:33 am

Well, it looks like Verizon has a bit of company at the negative end of the earnings spectrum — Sprint has now also reported a loss for the second quarter, although it’s a slightly smaller one than expected. Specifically, the company posted a $760 million net loss for the quarter that’s just ended, or 15 cents a share, which isn’t exactly great, but is better than the 17 cent loss analysts had predicted. That gain is at least partly attributed to strong sales of the HTC EVO 4G, and by the company’s best ever year-over-year improvement in net postpaid subscribers, which helped boost the number of wireless subscribers by 110,000 (for a total 48.2 million customers).

Mugen Battery Pack Doubles Evo 4G Battery Life

July 26, 2010 – 1:16 pm

he Sprint Evo 4G does a lot of things brilliantly, but endurance is not one of them. Until this Mugen battery pack came along, granting Evo owners’ wish of a full day’s use on one charge.

The 3,200mAh capacity HLI-A9292XL battery pack gives you twice the juice the 1,500mAh the Evo 4G ships with. It adds a bit of bulk, but what’s an extra 20mm of thickness when you’re already rocking one of the largest handsets out there?

The battery pack won’t ship until August 13th, but the $97 price tag seems like a bargain for the peace of mind that comes with knowing your phone won’t quit on you by lunchtime.

Sprint expands 4G coverage in the US

July 12, 2010 – 3:28 pm

Sprint just announced that they have expanded their 4G coverage in seven new metropolitan markets, where among them are Rochester (N.Y.), Syracuse (N.Y.), Merced (California), Visalia (California), Eugene (Oregon), Tri-Cities (Washington) and Yakima (Washington). These new markets might just see more and more people pick up the HTC EVO 4G (even if you like the white version), especially since its worthy rival, the iPhone 4, still has reception issues to be dealt with. Currently, Sprint offers 4G in 43 US markets, where the end of the year should see L.A., New York and Miami fall under the 4G net. You might want to get yours now in anticipation of December 31st when you update your Facebook profile to wish everyone a blessed new year over a 4G network.

White HTC EVO 4G arrives at Best Buy

July 6, 2010 – 10:02 pm

Best Buy was not supposed to release the white version of the EVO 4G from HTC today, but it seems that these smartphones have already landed in select Best Buy stores by now. July 11th is the official date where you can get your hands on one of these puppies, so might as well get ready to suit up and bring a nice camera along to make sure you capture each and every angle of your new beauty assuming you placed a pre-order earlier on. Oh yeah, when it comes to white colored handsets, we’d highly recommend getting some sort of cleaning cloth to go along with it.

Multitouch keyboard swiped from Droid X, hacked and color-matched for EVO 4G

July 6, 2010 – 10:27 am

One of the most compelling features of Motorola’s upcoming Droid X for Verizon is the multitouch capability of the keyboard, which in theory means you can do things like press shift and a letter at the same time; in practice, it means that you can belt out a message faster. Needless to say, owners of other Android devices want it, and xda-developers members have obliged as usual, even stopping along the way to change the Droid X’s red accents to green to better suit the EVO 4G’s UI color palette. Once the APK is installed (you’ll have to sideload it, naturally), it looks like you’ll be able to select and use it just as you would any other input method on the phone. Score one for platform flexibility, and score another for hackers.

Best Buy Wants to Fire Employee For His iPhone 4 vs. HTC EVO Video

July 3, 2010 – 2:42 pm

Article: RSS via: Gizmodo

The iPhone 4 vs. HTC EVO video making the rounds has gotten 1.7 million views, but when Best Buy found out it was their employee that made the video, they weren’t so much amused as angry.

Corporate asked them to take the video down, but the employee Brian Maupin declined, saying that it didn’t mention Best Buy anywhere. (It also didn’t mention Best Buy in the description either.) But Best Buy suspended him, and now might be fired, claims NBC Action News.

Hey Best Buy guy. Email us. You don’t need to work at Best Buy when you can make funny stuff like this for the internet. [NBC Action News]

jkOnTheRun Video: HTC EVO 4G

July 2, 2010 – 2:54 pm

The HTC EVO 4G is my new smartphone and so far it is the best phone I’ve owned. This short video gives a walk around the EVO to show what it packs, and demonstrates how fluidly the Snapdragon processor keeps things moving. In the video you’ll see how the camera works for still photos, and get a look at the EVO web browser in action. Check out my full review if you like what you see in the video, and you can also get a feel for how the EVO 4G performs while traveling.

As a bonus, there is a comparison of the standard LCD screen on the EVO with the AMOLED display of the Droid Incredible. You can get a feel from watching the video what makes AMOLED the screen to beat (not counting the Retina Display), if Samsung can ever make enough. It’s a full side-by-side look at too of the hottest Android phones today.
