How To: Install Android 2.3.3 Gingerbread update on Verizon Droid X

April 14, 2011 – 9:29 am

Attention Droid X users: There’s supposedly an OTA update coming to your handset that will give you Android 2.3 Gingerbread powers. While unconfirmed from Verizon at the moment, we can confirm that there is indeed a an update file floating around that will bring your Droid X up to the latest version of Android OS – and we have it.

The update brings the handset up to version 2.3.3, the latest version of Android for phones, and you’ll have a few tweaks throughout. The ROM has yet to be rooted, but that could happen as soon as today. To get to the latest version, you’ll need to be on the stock software, and if you’re not, you need to get back to 2.3.340 before you continue.

According to Computer World, Verizon has said that it is not currently pushing an OTA update. This could mean that this build is not final, and may not be fully cooked, so keep that in mind when flashing. That said, the build will likely be usable enough to be your daily driver.

To manually install Gingerbread on your Droid X, follow along.

We’re going to assume you’re on the stock Droid X ROM 2.3.340, and you take the responsibility if anything goes wrong. So, without further ado:

  1. Download the Gingerbread update file here and rename the file to update.zip
  2. Place the file in the root of your microSD card. (Inside no folders)
  3. Power down your phone
  4. Power your phone on by holding Home + Power. When you see the triangle appear, press Search. You are now in the “Recovery” system
  5. Using the volume keys, navigate to the “install update.zip” option and flash the file.

There you have it. You’re running on Gingerbread, enjoy!

Upcoming Motorola Droid X2 to Have Tegra 2?

January 27, 2011 – 2:43 pm

The Motorola Droid X has been a popular phone for Verizon. It was their answer to other large-screened devices like the EVO on Sprint and the HD2 on T-Mobile. That said, the Droid X is starting to fall a bit behind in the specs department when compared to the upcoming wave of Android phones like the Droid Bionic.

It looks like a successor to the Droid X, dubbed the Droid X2, might be on its way out in time for the spring. According to HotHardware, the Droid X2, known internally as the Daytona, will have a similar form factor and design compared to the current generation device, but will add the 960×540 qHD display and the Tegra 2 platform, but sadly, no LTE.

Verizon Wireless 2010/2011 roadmap leaked

August 9, 2010 – 10:43 pm

One of our Verizon Wireless sources has dropped a whole bunch of info in our laps. We’re talking intimate details of Verizon Wireless’ plans for the rest of 2010, 2011 and even some 2012 plans. Android tablets, LTE MiFi units, Android 3.0, video conferencing, and a whole lot more. Read on for the full details!

  • In addition to the Motorola DROID and Motorola DROID X, we’re told Motorola will launch a new DROID handset, the Motorola DROID Pro. It is supposed to have a 1.3GHz CPU, 4″ screen and global roaming capabilities. Estimated launch of November 2010
  • Motorola is working with Verizon on a “slab form-factor” device that sort of looks like an old Motorola Q but features a full touchscreen and global roaming. It will run Android 2.2. Maybe this will be a lower cost, MOTOBLUR handset?
  • There are a lot more Android invasions happening before the end of the year, we’re told. This includes a global Android device from both Samsung and HTC.
  • Samsung is working on a 7″ screen Android tablet with front-facing camera. Motorola is also working on a tablet as well, except it will sport a 10″ screen, either 1GHz or 1.3GHz CPU, front-facing camera, and Android 3.0. Don’t expect the Motorola so soon though, as we’re informed that while the launch was supposed to happen in December, Android 3.0 will probably hold up the release of that device and we should expect it around February 2011.
  • Verizon Wireless is aiming and on track to have at least 75% of the country covered in LTE coverage by April 2012
  • There will be a Novatel LTE MiFi device available in January or February that will apparently support up to 10 simultaneous Wi-Fi users.
  • Lastly, we’re told LTE data pricing will stick at $59.99/month, though it’s unclear what the data allowance will be. (This is for data cards, not smartphones)

Regardless of whether an iPhone comes to Verizon Wireless anytime soon, it’s obviously clear they aren’t slowing down with their huge Android push. With LTE coming up, and a major stable of high-performance smartphones, it seems like Verizon has positioned themselves to win. We’ll see how the end of the year and 2011 shape up before making any concrete judgements, though. Did we get anyone excited?

Motorola Droid X And Milestone 2 Arriving In France This Year

August 2, 2010 – 11:12 pm

We’re already lucky enough to be enjoying the Motorola Droid X already, but if you’re over in France and are wondering when you’ll be able to get hold of the device, word is going around that the Motorola Droid X will be launched in France in November or December, with the Droid 2 to follow closely after that. According to rumor, the Droid 2 will be dubbed the Motorola Milestone 2, which will be in line with the previous naming convention, seeing that the original Motorola Droid was dubbed the Motorola Milestone in Europe. Considering that both devices will be introduced later, there is a high chance that they will both be introduced with Android 2.2 FroYo, which is probably a little reward for folks who have been patient. If Motorola is planning to bring the device to France, other European countries such as UK, Germany, and Italy, shouldn’t be too far behind too.

Droid X Gets One-Click Rooting

July 28, 2010 – 11:37 pm

You could root your Droid X the old fashioned way, or you can download a program that’ll do it for you with a single touch. I’m not gonna tell you your business, but this is a no-brainer, folks. The program, by Alldroid forums member Sil3ntKi113, only works for Windows users, but it distills the complicated rooting process into a “Root Me” or “UnRoot Me” option screen. Of course, a rooted Droid X is only as good as the eFuse kill switch lets it be, so proceed with caution.

Verizon Smartphones Use More Data Than the iPhone

July 28, 2010 – 11:07 pm

According to a study, Verizon smartphone users use more data than iPhone users. That’s right, on average, Verizon smartphones—Android, webOS, and Windows Mobile phones—pull in 421 MB a month of data. iPhone users only use 338MB.

The study was conducted by wireless billing vendor Validas and excluded Blackberry devices (because they compress data). It’s sort of stunning that combining all Verizon smartphones together (even those lumpy old Windows ones) can out-usage the iPhone. It’s proof that Android phones like the Droid X are really just sucking down all the bits they can.

Verizon’s average is boosted because there are a lot more “power users” on Big Red. Twice as many Verizon smartphone users use 500MB-1GB a month compared to iPhone users and 4% of Verizon smartphone users use over 2GB of data compared to only 1.6% iPhone users.

New DROID X Ad Takes Another Shot at Apple

July 28, 2010 – 3:14 pm

Another full page Droid X ad is hitting newspapers tomorrow and it takes a wonderful shot at the i*hone and its ridiculous free bumper giveaway…

“At Motorola, we believe a customer shouldn’t have to dress up their phone for it to work properly.  That’s why the DROID X comes with a dual antenna design.  The kind that allows you to hold the phone any way you like to make crystal clear calls without a bulky phone jacket.  For us it’s just one of those things that comes as a given when you’ve been making mobile phones for over 30 years.”

Apple, we’re laughing at you again.

If you missed the last one, check it here.

Android 2.2 upgrade for Droid X may already be trickling out, other Droids shortly?

July 28, 2010 – 2:34 pm

We’ve already gathered that Verizon, Moto, and HTC all seem to be pretty well committed to bumping most of their Droid models to Froyo (as well they should), but things are starting to get real — really real. First off, we’ve been fed a shot of a tipster’s Droid X that has apparently already been blessed with 2.2 over the air; the baseband version is a tick older than the one in a shot leaked over on My Droid Life, but it’s anyone’s guess how Motorola is staging this and what the final gold binary really contains. We’ve also seen a 2.2 ROM for the Droid Incredible leak recently (and the Droid before that), so uncorroborated rumors we’re seeing that three of the four retail Droids will be getting 2.2 by the 15th of next month aren’t necessarily crazy. Remember: think positive thoughts.

Motorola Droid X caught running on FroYo

July 28, 2010 – 2:07 pm

While Android 2.2, also known as FroYo, is not available on the Motorola Droid X on an official basis just yet, it doesn’t mean that it isn’t out already as evident by this screenshot you see here. Strange that this 2.2 build has root access, identified by the Dropcap2 icon located on top, but closing one eye to the situation, it more or less matches up to what an Android 2.2-powered Droid X would look like in the About Phone page. This could very well signal an Android 2.2 release as early as next week, so stay tuned!

Android 2.2 FroYo To Hit The Verizon Droid X, Incredible, And Droid Next Week?

July 27, 2010 – 1:02 pm

While it hasn’t been officially confirmed just yet, word is going around that the Motorola Droid X, HTC Droid Incredible, and the Motorola Droid will be getting the juicy Android 2.2 update at the same time. If this rumor is accurate, then the update will begin to be pushed out on August 6th, with the update expected to have arrived on all devices by August 15th. With these devices getting Android 2.2 so soon, it also gives us hope that the previous leaks indicating that the Motorola Droid 2 will be launching with Android 2.2 from the get go are right on the money.
