Dell Streak 10 will run Honeycomb, may share a body with Windows

February 16, 2011 – 4:00 pm

Worried that Dell’s Streak 10 might pull a Streak 5 and ship with a aging, smartphone-specific OS? Fear no more — Dell told investors that the 10.1-inch Android tablet will arrive later this year with Honeycomb safely nestled inside. Also, it seems Dell may looking to consolidate the number of form factors and software platforms it supports, as an executive stated during today’s Q4 earnings call that the company’s other 10.1-inch tablet — a Windows device — could have the same shell. When asked broadly about the company’s tablet strategy with regards to other operating systems, this was the answer Dell had on tap:

For tablets, it’s Android Honeycomb and Windows, and we have customers with a preference for either one. We can create platforms that share a great degree of hardware commonality that can run both — or either — operating system, and we don’t see any other options that are worthy of consideration.

Guess we shouldn’t expect a MeeGo tablet out of Dell anytime soon.

Dell 10-inch Windows 7 tablet teased

February 9, 2011 – 9:51 am

But fails to detail anything

Dell has done its usual trick of teasing those who turned up to the the manufacturer’s Business Event in San Francisco on Tuesday, with the promise that the company will launch a Windows 7 powered tablet later this year, but then failing to say much more than that.

In a move that many will see as the company taking on HP and its still yet to be released slate, the nameless Dell Windows 7 tablet will come with a 10-inch screen.

“Dell plans to extend its existing tablet portfolio with a 10-inch, Windows 7-based business-ready tablet later this year,” said the company. “The upcoming tablet is designed for end-users who need greater mobility, as well as IT organizations that demand control, security, manageability and integration with existing infrastructure investments.”

The announcement was buried in a much larger, more sweeping press release covering the company’s complete business line-up for the foreseeable future.

That’s pretty much all the company is saying right now, and were it not for the chaps over at cnet.com being quick with their camera, we wouldn’t even have a picture.

Not that you can tell much from the plastic mock-up that the Dell man was holding when they snapped him. If that device isn’t looking too hot, it’s because, in reality it’s just a rather expensive mock-up.

We’ve been privy to Dell’s mock-ups before. It’s fair to say they are valid marketing tools for salespeople to give people a general understanding on what the product will look like and how heavy it will be, but that’s as far as they normally go.

Even a child would be disappointed.

Dell Streak gets Honeycomb SDK port, starting to look like a real tablet

February 8, 2011 – 12:41 pm

Dell always told us the Streak was a tablet and not a phone, so it makes perfect sense to see Android’s latest version, the tablet-friendly Honeycomb, ported over to its 5-inch slate. As usual with these builds, we’re still at a very early stage, with the chap responsible for the hack noting that “no way is this close to release,” but it’s still rather exciting to see that brand new interface freshening up familiar pieces of kit. And hey, it’s not like Dell itself is going to be delivering Android 3.0 anytime soon either, right? Click the source link to keep yourself updated on how this community port progresses.

Dell Streak Just £319.20 On Tesco

January 26, 2011 – 9:45 am

Tesco have put the Dell Streak on their website on Pay As You Go for just £319.20 which is a good £80 less than a sim free price direct from Dell and cheaper than O2 currently charge.

The Dell Streak is not exactly the smallest device with a massive 5 inch screen so not ideal as a day to day phone device but as a tablet is has to be one of the best and now runs Android 2.2.

Looks like when it comes to Tesco and savings on a smartphone…. every little helps (sorry I could not resist)

Dell Inspiron Duo hybrid hits Three in February

January 25, 2011 – 2:53 pm

UK carrier Three has announced that, as of February, it will be offering the Dell Inspiron Duo convertible hybrid netbook/tablet. Based on Intel’s dual-core 1.5GHz Atom N550 with 2GB of RAM and a 320GB hard-drive, the Windows 7 based Inspiron Duo has a 10.1-inch capacitive touchscreen that can rotate in its bezel to face forward, for regular notebook use, or outward, to be used as a tablet.

As we found, though, the extra weight and bulk of the rest of the netbook – including a reasonable keyboard – does remove some of the mobility friendliness of the Inspiron Duo. We’re presuming Three will be offering a 3G-enabled version of the hybrid, though it’s unclear whether that means an integrated modem or an external one (either USB or mobile hotspot).

No word on pricing or specific launch dates at this stage, though we’re assuming it won’t be long before we hear more. More details on the Dell Inspiron Duo in our hands-on report.

Future Dell Streak 7 owners do the fine-print math, figure tablet will cost $330 max on contract

January 21, 2011 – 11:07 am

We’ve never seen an official price for Dell’s Streak 7 tablet, but we can now readily guess what it will be — thanks to T-Mobile’s website, which is now two for two. You see, the wireless carrier typically lets you pay for devices in monthly installments rather than one lump sum, and StreakSmart discovered the former number is already printed below. As we’re sure you’ve already discerned, that means four easy payments of $82.50 will buy you the Tegra 2-toting 4G tablet — assuming the figure is correct — and now that we’ve perfected our QVC salesman voice, we’ll let you decide whether or not that’s a deal.

T-Mobile Dell Streak 7 Android tablet to cost $330?

January 20, 2011 – 4:44 pm

The Dell Streak 7 Android tablet that’s arriving on T-Mobile has had its price leaked on its product page. Apparently in the small print at the bottom of the product page, it states,”$82.50 down payment, plus 3 monthly payments of $82.50, required.” This seems very much like their T-Mobile’s Equipment Installment plan used for other products such as the Galaxy Tab. There’s a possibility that the small text was a mistake and shouldn’t be there but if it turns out to be accurate, we can expect the 7″ Android tablet to cost $330.  Do take this with a pinch of salt though because there must be a reason that T-Mobile didn’t list its price where the price is supposed to be. But if it turns out to be correct, how do you feel about the price of the Streak 7? Will you be purchasing one when it drops this year?

January 7, 2011 – 12:21 am

Dell has officially announced the Dell Streak 7 tablet, which will land on T-Mobile USA in “the coming weeks” and take advantage of the carrier’s 4G HSPA+ network. The Streak 7 has a 7-inch touchscreen covered in toughened Gorilla Glass, and runs NVIDIA’s dual-core 1GHz Tegra 2 processor.

There’s also WiFi and Bluetooth 2.1, along with a 1.3-megapixel front facing camera for video calls, and a rear camera for photography. Flash Player 10.1 is supported, and the Streak 7 is capable of up to 22MB/s on T-Mobile’s HSPA+ network.

No word on pricing at this stage, but T-Mobile says the Streak 7 will arrive on its network imminently. Nor do we know if Dell plans to update the Streak 7 to Android Honeycomb; it will apparently launch with 2.2 Froyo.

Android-Powered Dell Venue Loses the QWERTY Keyboard

December 16, 2010 – 11:58 am

Korean carrier KT has shown off a heap of Android phones it’s launching, with the highlight being the Dell Venue—the expected Android remake of the Windows Phone 7 Venue Pro. It launches there this month.

The Android version of the Dell Venue will arrive with a 4.1″ Gorilla Glass-fronted AMOLED screen and ditches the sliding portrait QWERTY keyboard found in the Venue Pro—but otherwise has the same angular shape and button layout as Dell’s Windows Phone 7 handset. It’ll launch with Android 2.2 onboard over there.
