Dell Streak 7 Honeycomb updates have started rolling

October 4, 2011 – 2:38 pm

Dell has apparently started rolling-out Honeycomb update for its 7-inch tablet – Streak 7. Not all users are getting it and we’re having a hard time finding some rule in this process. Is it pushed on a first come – first served basis (users who check for the update get it first), or is it a region-specific thing?

According to some reports, the new version of Android for tablets will wipe your device clean, so you better backup all of your important data before pushing the button.

However, there’s also one additional problem – how Honeycomb performs on Streak 7′s WVGA (800×480 pixels) display? I never thought the platform was optimized to work on such screens. Guess I was wrong…

In any case, if you own the Dell Streak, make sure to have a copy of your apps and data stored on your PC/Mac, just in case something goes wrong. And as far as we’ve heard – you’ll need to re-install everything from the scratch and once again sync your contacts and calendars…

Dell and Baidu are working together on tablet computers and mobile phones

September 6, 2011 – 3:51 pm

In China, the Baidu search engine is the most popular and widely used. Google operates in China as well, but is second place behind Baidu. China is also one of the fastest growing markets for tablets and has one of the largest mobile phone using populations on the planet. Dell is teaming up with Baidu to make new mobile phones and tablet computers for the Chinese market.

The phones would apparently be branded with the Baidu name, which is one of the largest brands in the country. Dell hopes that the tie up with one of the largest brands in China will help jump start its ailing tablet and smartphone business. Some analysts don’t think the tie up will help Dell that much with one saying China is still Apple’s market and that this is just Dell “grasping at straws.”

Dell has offered no time line on when the devices will launch. However, Reuters reports that a Chinese outlet is saying the products could come as early as November. Dell and Baidu are already working together on a Baidu branded Streak 5 tablet in China. The Streak 5 was discontinued in the US last month after poor sales. Dell has had more success in China with its new products than in other countries so the tie up with Baidu is no surprise.

Dell quietly pulls the Streak to perform an update, might bring it back next month?

July 22, 2011 – 10:36 am

What Dell can give, it can taketh away. That’s the story with the Streak, which has quietly vanished from retail as well as the outfit’s online storefront. We first got wind of this when a tipster wrote in to say he had spoken to a company employee, who said the 5-inch Android tablet / phone had been discontinued. When we reached out to Dell’s PR team to see what’s up, we got the pat “Dell does not comment on rumors, speculation, or unannounced products.” So then we called customer service, pretending to order one, and that’s when things got interesting. The rep told us the Streak hasn’t, in fact, been end-of-life’d; it’s just been pulled from shelves while it receives an update. The gentleman couldn’t say how severe the issue is, though he insists it has zilch to do with Android. Whatever it is, Dell isn’t even accepting orders for the 5-inch Streak at the moment. If all goes according to plan, though, we’re told it should go back on sale in early August.

Dell Peju tablet to run Windows 7; Coming in October?

July 11, 2011 – 10:31 am

Aside from its Android tablets, Dell is preparing to return to the “Windows tablet scene.” What we have here is the upcoming Dell Peju, which we’re hearing will be launched at some point in October. We’re talking about a high-end device with Intel’s Core i5 processor, 4GB of RAM, 64 or 128 GB of SSD storage, 10.1-inch 1920×1080 pixels Gorilla Glass-protected touchscreen, 5,500 mAh battery (good for 6-8 hours) and 3G/4G and Wi-Fi connectivity. In addition, there are two cameras (5-megapixel on the back and 1.3-megapixel front-facing one), USB slots, mini VGA and HDMI out. All this is packed in a box measuring 10.8×6.7×0.63 inches and weighing 1.9 lbs. Windows 7 Pro will run the show, though allowing upgrade to Windows 8, once it’s out.

Finally for those who want even more connectivity options as well as the ability to use the Peju at home, Dell will offer a specially designed docking station with additional ports. You can check few leaked documents from a video below. Enjoy!

Spy Shots: Dell’s 7-Inch Tablet Has a Slide-Out Split Keyboard

June 9, 2011 – 12:07 pm

What the tablet world needs is innovation, and from these newly uncovered spy pics, it looks like Dell is the one stepping up with a design that’s unlike any other.

Rather than copying the look and feel of the iPad as so many other tablet manufacturers have done, Dell has apparently pinpointed one of the iPad’s weakest characteristics and improved upon it: its keyboard.

In these pictures (somehow obtained by Engadget), notice the split keyboard that’s not on this little 7-inch tablet’s touchscreen, but it’s part of a slide-out keypad that gives each of its users’ thumbs an easy shot at quick typing.

We’re getting a feeling of déjà vu here. Isn’t this design getting precariously close to those failed tablets of five years ago that Microsoft and Intel codenamed “Project Origami?” Some of those Ultra-Mobile PCs’ split keyboards were arranged on either side of the screen, and some even had slide-out keyboards.

Maybe Dell figures the reason those Origami PCs didn’t succeed was because they were underpowered, their touchscreens didn’t work well, they were too big, heavy and overpriced — not because their keyboards weren’t good.

Back to the present, Dell presented this prototype in both black and white finishes, and each had a rear camera which we hope has better quality than the iPad’s. Beyond those specs, there’s precious little info about when we might see this tablet design hit the marketplace, if ever.

Still, perhaps copycat manufacturers might want to take a look at this design rather than creating yet another Apple-esque slab. What do you think, commenters? Is this throwback to the past an improvement on the iPad and all the other tablets that look just like it?

Dell Streak Pro Honeycomb slate dropping June with Tegra 2 T20?

May 19, 2011 – 10:01 am

The Dell Streak Pro 10-inch Android tablet is apparently set to launch in June, and will run Android 3.x Honeycomb on NVIDIA’s 1GHz dual-core Tegra 2 T20, not the faster, 3D-capable T25. The 261 x 176.4 x 12.9 mm, 720g slate is expected to have a 10.1-inch 1280 x 800 like other Honeycomb tablets we’ve seen and, according to Tweakers‘ sources, will be offered with various accessories including a “productivity dock” and a folding cover with an integrated keyboard.

There’ll also be an in-car charger – presumably so you can use the Streak Pro as a massive PND – and a regular desktop media dock as is already available for the smaller Streak and Streak 7. The Streak Pro itself will have 1GB of memory and a choice of 16GB, 32GB or 64GB of internal storage (along with an SDHC memory card slot). Connectivity will include WiFi b/g/n, Bluetooth 2.1+EDR and, on certain models, AT&T 4G LTE.

Twin cameras – 5-megapixels on the back; 2-megapixels on the front – and various black, pink, blue or red skins to cover the brushed aluminum chassis will also be on offer. No word on pricing at this stage, but hopefully Dell will have learned from Samsung’s example and kept things aggressive against the iPad 2.

Dell Streak 7 UK release is here

April 14, 2011 – 5:50 pm

£299 and ready to rock

The Dell Streak 7 has finally reached the UK, having been available in the USA since the beginning of February on T-Mobile USA.

The Dell Streak 7, is the bigger brother of the Dell Streak 5 and will cost £299 without contract – incidentally the same price as the Samsung Galaxy Tab after a bevy of price drops in recent months.

For you’re hard earned pocket money, you’ll get a 7-inch Gorilla Glass touting tablet that runs Android 2.2 rather than Honeycomb.

Of course you’ll also get a rear-facing 5 megapixel camera for high-definition stills and video recording, Wi-Fi, and a dual core 1GHz NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor and full support for Adobe Flash Player.

Those however hoping to use the tablet without a wireless hotspot nearby will be out of luck for the time being. A 3G version is on the cards says Dell, however you’ll have to wait for later this Spring – so hopefully some time before June – before it becomes available.

No word on which operator will be stocking it, whether it will be subsidised, or indeed when exactly it will be available.

We will keep you posted.

Dell 10 inch Windows 7 tablet delayed

April 6, 2011 – 10:59 am

The launch date for Dell’s 10-inch Windows 7 based tablet looks to slip until the fall according to industry analysts. Nobody knows why the 10-inch tablet won’t make it’s debut until at least September, but it’s certainly going to spell doom for Dell taking advantage of the back to school run-up. Dell is planning to position the 10-inch as a business grade tablet anyway, so they not feel the urgency to make the back to school window, instead focusing on the Holiday crowd instead.

Dell began to fan the flames of a 10-inch tablet way back in October, and have released both 5 and 7 inch Dell Streak models with mixed reviews. But with growing business interest in tablets, it makes sense that Dell will stay the course and continue with the product line. That’s good news for those looking for integrate some mobility into their Windows centered lives. But with Windows 8 rumored to be a more tablet centric experience and scheduled to be out in early 2012, is a 10-inch Windows 7 tablet coming to late to the party? Not really.

It’s one saving grace may come down to one word … BLUESTACKS. As Android Community reported yesterday, a company has managed to create a “Parallels” style experience which will enable PCs to not only dual boot between Android and Windows, but run both OS concurrently and switch between the two. Several PC companies are very interested in the possibilities Bluestacks brings to the party and Dell could be one of them. Consider this … with Apple releasing an OSX app store for Desktops, the Bluestacks function gives PC users the ability to invest in low cost Android apps and run them from their desktop PCs. And even though Google won’t allow access to the Android Marketplace for anything other than “licensed by Google” products now, the Amazon App store for Android represents a viable option. And if Android catches on in the desktop world, could it spread like a wildfire burning up every Windows bush in front of it? Only time will tell.

StreakDroid 1.9.0 takes Dell Streak Own3rs to the frontier

April 4, 2011 – 10:01 am

Fans of rooting the Dell Streak are likely familiar with the efforts DJ_Steve, a tenacious phone enthusiast with a penchant for keeping the tablet at its bleeding edge. To the uninitiated, this five-inch smartphone is enjoying an underground renaissance, thanks in large part to the hacked ROMs known as StreakDroid. Even while Froyo has been available officially from Dell for some time now, the aforementioned spinner got it there first.

Releasing a tireless flurry of updates since then, StreakDroid now sits at version 1.9.0. Dubbed ‘The Final Frontier,’ DJ_Steve’s latest release brings Android version 2.2.2 to the Streak, along with a more polished, heretofore unreleased version of Dell’s Stage UI. Additionally, users are now given the option to select a default launcher before installation, with LauncherPro, Stage UI, and Gingerbread’s launcher available for the choosing. Issues of a flaky accelerometer are documented in the release notes, though initial user reactions have been overwhelmingly positive. Streak hackers, get your download on in the source below, and let us know how this particular mix resonates with you.
