Clearwire Clear Spot 4G Apollo: New portable hotspot that can handle 8 connections, does 6 hours per charge

July 27, 2011 – 9:15 am

Clearwire, America’s WiMAX operator that supplies Sprint with their 4G network and is also facing some serious financial woes, has announced a new piece of hardware, the Clear Spot 4G Apollo. It’s a portable WiFi hotspot, meaning it takes the WiMAX signal that’s hopefully in your neck of the woods and converts it to WiFi so things like your laptop, smartphone, Kindle, whatever, can connect to the internets. Curiously enough, Clearwire doesn’t specify whether this device is capable of roaming on 3G networks. This is important since WiMAX isn’t exactly blanketing the 48 contiguous states at the moment, in fact there are huge pockets of the country that lack coverage. But hey, for $99 and no need for a 2 year contract, this thing is a steal. Plans start at $35 per month for unlimited “at home” use, $45 for unlimited “mobile” use, and $55 for unlimited “home and mobile” use. We have absolutely no idea what that means, so we feel rather bad for consumers who have to figure this stuff out on their own.

The bigger question here is do dedicated devices like these even need to be purchased now that most every Android phone on the market, not to mention every iPhone, already offer the same “hotspot” capability? You may argue that having a device like this is beneficial because if it dies, well … at least you still have your phone. That’s true, but it’s yet another piece of gear to lug around and make sure you’ve got charged up. Operators tend to charge more for tethering plans, which is a bummer, but you can easily get around that by opting to buy an unlocked device for full price and then shoving your SIM card inside. Something like the Google Nexus S is perfect for this.

What’s your experience with dedicated portable hotspots. Are they worth the money?

Update: Nope, no 3G roaming.

Clearwire video shows off LTE download and upload speeds

January 11, 2011 – 10:47 am

Clear boasts of their LTE connectivity in this video of their download and upload speeds, where multiple independent tests managed to hit 90 Mbps downloads as well as 30 Mbps when uploading. Of course, do bear in mind that this was tested on a network that has just a couple of people or so connected to it, but it does highlight the potential of what 20 MHz wide channels is capable of achieving. Clearwire however, relies on the 2500 MHz spectrum which doesn’t do too well at all at penetrating buildings and requires over twice the number of cell towers in order to cover a particular territory, but the upside to that is the more towers there are, users gain from more speed. Investors of Clearwire should be able to heave a sigh of relief knowing the the company has the tech to back up their money, the only trick is to make sure enough users sign up for their service to keep it profitable.

Clearwire iSpot hacked not too soon after release

August 12, 2010 – 3:00 pm

Clearwire’s iSpot has been hacked just a week after its release. This 4G WiMAX mobile router was originally an Apple-only device, connecting up to eight Apple devices to it, where website ispotunrestricted.com has been configured to generate an unlocked custom configuration profile which can then be loaded onto your iSpot. This profile allows you to hook up any Wi-Fi enabled device to the iSpot when loaded, apart from Apple device support, of course.

The unlocking method is so easy that you won’t need a doctorate degree or speak codes in your dreams to perform, making the $25 monthly subscription fee sound like a steal, considering you get unlimited 4G data. Great for folks who stay in WiMAX blanketed areas, another method which skips messing around with the iSpot’s configuration file would be to spoof the MAC address of your machine in order to have it match an Apple device. Bear in mind that this can and will most likely void your warranty as well as your service plan with Clearwire.

Clear iSpot — 4G Hotspot for iOS

August 5, 2010 – 1:32 pm

Clear is looking to capitalize on the popularity of the iPad by offering a mobile hotspot device for Apple products. The aptly named iSpot is roughly the size of an Apple mouse and shares connections on the Clear 4G (WiMAX) network with up to five devices using Wi-Fi. The iSpot is restricted to iOS devices, so only iPhones, iPods and iPads can share the 4G connection.

The restriction to iOS devices is due to the low monthly rate of $25 for unlimited 4G connectivity. The Clear 4G network is currently available in major cities in the U.S. There’s no 3G capability integrated in the iSpot, so if you find yourself outside a 4G coverage area, your iSpot will become an iBrick. The iSpot has a quoted battery life of four hours on a single charge. Clear has priced the iSpot at $99.99, but is selling it for $29 today only.

Clear also has a version of the iSpot, dubbed the Spot, that will share a 4G connection with any eight devices (not just iOS). The unlimited 4G data plan is about $40 monthly, with the exact price based on the customer’s location.

Clearwire to maintain unlimited data plans

June 7, 2010 – 12:46 am

AT&T isn’t going to continue with their unlimited data plans, but that doesn’t mean that wireless broadband provider Clearwire will do the same – they have recently issued an explanation on unlimited data and tiered pricing, and could not resist poking fun at AT&T in the process.

While large wireless carriers are moving away from unlimited data plans or signaling a desire to do so, Clearwire continues to offer unlimited data plans on a faster, open 4G network. You might ask why Clearwire can do this, while larger incumbents can’t. The answer is simple. We have an all-IP network and unrivaled spectrum position, providing unmatched capacity to deliver mobile data. To put it in terms of old landline technology, our “pipe” is much bigger – several times that of incumbent carriers. This is why technological debates about radio standards (WiMAX vs. LTE vs. HSPA+) are misplaced, and why larger incumbents are moving to tiered pricing despite plans to upgrade their networks to new technologies. We know that customers want faster speeds and more usage at a good price. Our cost efficient, high capacity, and highly-scalable all IP-network backbone, combined with our unmatched spectrum position gives us a unique and sustainable advantage to serve our retail and wholesale businesses. Our open network, means that Wi-Fi equipped devices including those manufactured by Apple for example, can access our network using our personal 4G/Wi-Fi hotspot.
