BlackBerry Traffic Beta adds voice directions

November 16, 2011 – 3:03 pm

RIM’s own navigation app, BlackBerry Traffic, is getting a few new features in the Beta Zone. The biggie is voice navigation, so turn-by-turn directions are read out loud to you in a friendly robot voice, which is standard for most nav apps. Voice guidance includes a bunch of options, including standard and high-quality audio, as well as setting the frequency of assistance. On top of that, users can now drill down into specific road data and see if there are blockages, construction, or tolls to pay (and avoid them when routing, if desired).

BlackBerry Traffic is a little bit different than most GPS navigation services in that it uses anonymous traffic data farmed up from BlackBerry devices currently on the road, as well as other sources. By piling that information on top of standard turn-by-turn directions, BlackBerry Traffic aims to provide the fastest travel route possible. This is a scheme RIM picked up when they acquired Dash Navigation awhile back.

With this feature, BlackBerry Traffic feels a bit more like a grown-up navigation app, but I’d still much prefer an updated version of Google Maps with Navigation. Unfortunately, Google’s interest in developing much of anything for BlackBerry has been waning for some time, and with RIM’s Bing partnership, that’s unlikely to change anytime soon.

Head on over to the BlackBerry Beta Zone to try out BlackBerry Traffic 3.0 and the new voice assistance feature.

BlackBerry Bold 9790: The new thinner Bold

November 15, 2011 – 2:40 pm

Bold 9900 goes on a diet

Like the BlackBerry Bold 9900 but feel it’s a little too wide for your liking? Research In Motion hears you it seems and has announced that it will be bringing a new slimmer version of the BlackBerry Bold to the UK after Christmas.

Announcing the new phone on Tuesday; the BlackBerry Bold 9790 as it will be known is more an update to the BlackBerry Bold 9780 rather than just a thinner version of the BlackBerry Bold 9900.

The new BlackBerry Bold 9790 features a QWERTY keyboard, optical trackpad and touch display for the first time over last year’s 9780.

“We are very excited to expand the BlackBerry 7 portfolio with the new BlackBerry Bold 9790,” said Carlo Chiarello, Senior Vice President, Handheld Product Management at Research In Motion. “BlackBerry smartphones offer a uniquely refined mobile communications experience that people love and we think many customers will be thrilled by the faster performance, beautiful touch displays and sleek designs available with these new BlackBerry 7 based models.”

The new Bold 9790 smartphone will be narrower in design as the company tries to appeal to those that believe the current flagship, the Bold 9900 is too “fat” and “wide”.

It will pack a 1GHz processor, and 8GB of onboard memory and an expandable memory card slot that supports up to 32 GB of additional storage. As with other phones from the Canadian manufacturer, the phone will come with NFC (Near Field Communications) support.

RIM’s UK MD Stephen Bates, has told Pocket-lint that he expects the new phone to be available in the UK in early January.

In related news, the company has also announced an all-touch version of the BlackBerry Curve that ditches the keyboard altogether. Not to be mistaken with the BlackBerry Torch, the new BlackBerry Curve 9380 will come in the same form factor as the current Curve 9360 however without that QWERTY keyboard.

Google-Moto pulls in $228m following settlement with RIM

October 31, 2011 – 3:02 pm

Mystery ‘company’ ponied up $175m in cash alone

Google’s new acquisition Motorola Mobility says it has bagged $228m so far from a patent licensing deal with another, unnamed company – which appears likely to be BlackBerry maker RIM.

The Chocolate Factory’s new mobile hardware tentacle got an upfront cash payment of $175m and a licensing agreement that brought its pre-tax gain up to $228m during the nine months until the start of October 2011, from “a company”.

The filing PDF (56-page/181KB) said in a mysterious fashion:

In June 2010, the Company announced that it had entered into a settlement and license agreement with another company, which resolved all outstanding litigation between the two companies. The agreement includes provisions for an upfront payment of $175 million from the other company to the Company, future royalties to be paid by the other company to the Company for the license of certain intellectual property, and the transfer of certain patents between the companies. As a result of this agreement and the valuation of the patents exchanged, the Company recorded a pre-tax gain of $228 million during the nine months ended October 2, 2010, related to the settlement of the outstanding litigation between the parties.

A Motorola Mobility spokesperson refused to reveal the name of the company. However the only licensing agreement and patent litigation settlement Motorola announced in June last year was the one with BlackBerry-maker Research in Motion (RIM). As of this article’s publication, RIM representatives had not responded to requests for comment.

The mobile manufacturer said it and RIM would “benefit from a long-term, intellectual property cross-licensing arrangement involving the parties receiving cross-licenses of various patent rights, including patent rights relating to certain industry standards and certain technologies, such as 2G, 3G, 4G, 802.11 and wireless email”.

The firm also said the two companies would transfer certain patents to each other, but added that the specific financial terms of the deal were confidential.

In today’s filing, Motorola Mobility said that it was still involved in a number of patent lawsuits that could impact its business, most notably suits and countersuits with Microsoft, but said some of these could be resolved soon.

“We are involved in significant patent litigation with industry competitors and other relevant patent holders. Several of these matters could be resolved during the remainder of 2011 or the first half of 2012,” the filing said.

The company also warned that its upcoming merger with Google – still awaiting approvals – could ramp up its legal issues.

“The announcement and pendency of the merger may have a negative impact on our business, financial results and operations or disrupt our business by … intensifying existing litigation or increasing new legal claims from our competitors and other third parties, particularly as companies vigorously pursue and protect their intellectual property rights with patent litigation,” the filing added.

The merger is also keeping the firm from any huge gains in its revenues, as its future as Googorola remains uncertain.

The mobile devices segment of its business, which shipped 11.6 million devices including 4.8 smartphones, recorded net revenues of $2.4bn compared to $2bn in the third quarter of last year. That gave it a slight reduction in losses from $43m in 2010 to $41m this year.

The total loss for Motorola Mobility in the third quarter was $32m down from $34m in Q3 2010.

BlackBerry BBX demo shows PlayBook running Android apps (video)

October 25, 2011 – 9:22 am

RIM recently showed off and detailed its new BBX OS platform at Devcon 2011, in San Francisco, but now a video has emerged of the new BlackBerry OS running Android apps – something that will bring mass appeal to the platform.

The BBX OS is based on the company’s QNX platform, and hopes to unify RIM’s smartphones and tablets under one operating system banner – rather than using two separate platforms for each device.

And now it looks like we can see the new BBX OS in action as a video posted by a developer shows it running Android apps. There have been posts previously from RIM itself, but it’s always nice to see something working outside test conditions – hopefully giving us an idea of what we can expect in real-world  use.

All the apps used in the video seem to come to life pretty quickly, and it ties in with RIM’s claims that there will be a smooth downloading of Android apps, with users not able to tell the difference between Android and native BlackBerry until the app is actually launched.

The app will appear in App World as if it is a regular BlackBerry native app and run in the operating system’s Android Player.

It’s unclear when we can expect to have this kind of functionality in our hands, but it would be nice if RIM kept up a bit of momentum as a large app library could open up its products to a whole new user base.

Facebook Messenger for BlackBerry takes on BBM

October 20, 2011 – 1:41 pm

Dedicated app for BB users

Facebook Messenger has landed on BlackBerry, the social networking site has announced, bringing with it a load of new features into the mix.

“In this version, we’ve included a bunch of new features and performance improvements designed to make your messaging experience even better,” says Facebook on the new app, that joins the Android and iPhone versions that are currently available.

One of those new features is the ability to see who’s online and who’s on mobile, and know when the other person is typing. It’s also easier to send messages to the people you message most.

The new Facebook Messenger for BlackBerry is available in the App World now.

The app is standalone – not just an extension of the current Facebook apps – and ties in with the Message side of your Facebook persona. This means it will bring in all your Facebook conversations no matter where they took place, also offering additional features like one-click access to messages, location mapping, and the ability to message groups and mobile contacts.

If your message target is a Facebook friend already they will receive the message through the social network, but you can also message non-Facebook friends with notes that will send as texts.

“When you’re on the go, coordinating a bunch of people can be tricky, especially if plans change at the last minute,” said Lucy Zhang, Beluga co-founder and Facebook engineer at the time of the original iPhone launch in August.

“With Messenger, you can quickly start a group conversation and message everyone at once. If you choose to add your location, the people you’re messaging with can easily find each other on the map. You can also attach photos, so everyone else can see and comment on what you’re looking at.”

BlackBerry outage victims offered apps not cash

October 17, 2011 – 1:38 pm

RIM has announced its compensation package for BlackBerry users affected by last week’s outage, and if you were hoping for a refund then you’re going to be disappointed. Instead, RIM is offering a bundle of twelve apps – usually collectively priced at over $100 from the BlackBerry App World – free, including titles such as SIMS 3 and Vlingo Plus, while enterprise customers will also get a month’s free Technical Support.

If enterprise users already have a Technical Support contract, they’ll find an extra month’s service tacked onto the end of it. Those without will be offered a standalone free month of the enhanced services, with no obligation to continue.

Everyone else will have to wait for RIM to begin to roll out the free apps, which the company says will happen “over the coming weeks” and run until the end of the year. “We are grateful to our loyal BlackBerry customers for their patience,” RIM co-CEO Mike Lazaridis said in a statement. “We have apologized to our customers and we will work tirelessly to restore their confidence. We are taking immediate and aggressive steps to help prevent something like this from happening again.”

Whether that will satisfy angry users – or indeed prevent them from jumping ship to Android or iOS – remains to be seen. Analysts estimated the outage – which lasted up to three days, and was blamed on a fault in both server and backup-server systems – may well cost RIM over $100m.

Compensation Apps:

  • SIMS 3 – Electronic Arts
  • Bejeweled – Electronic Arts
  • N.O.V.A. – Gameloft
  • Texas Hold’em Poker 2 – Gameloft
  • Bubble Bash 2 – Gameloft
  • Photo Editor Ultimate – Ice Cold Apps
  • DriveSafe.ly Pro – iSpeech.org
  • iSpeech Translator Pro – iSpeech.org
  • Drive Safe.ly Enterprise – iSpeech.org
  • Nobex Radio™ Premium – Nobex
  • Shazam Encore – Shazam
  • Vlingo Plus: Virtual Assistant – Vlingo

RIM: Our BBM Core Switch Failed. Then Our Back-Up Failed.

October 13, 2011 – 12:07 pm

BlackBerry maker RIM has released a statement on the ongoing BlackBerry Messenger service failures, saying that pretty much everything broke at once. And there’s now a big backlog of sexts to process.

According to a statement issued by RIM, the network’s “core switch” failed, whatever a core switch might be, while the back-up system designed to kick-in in such a crisis scenario also failed to work. Which created the core meltdown of BlackBerry’s messaging system.

Here’s RIM on the developing BBM downtime nightmare:

The messaging and browsing delays being experienced by BlackBerry users in Europe, the Middle East, Africa, India, Brazil, Chile and Argentina were caused by a core switch failure within RIM’s infrastructure.

Although the system is designed to failover to a back-up switch, the failover did not function as previously tested.

As a result, a large backlog of data was generated and we are now working to clear that backlog and restore normal service as quickly as possible..

Incredible to see such a full, global problem, effecting users from Europe, Asia and South America. It must be one hell of a big switch.

Purported Android BlackBerry Messenger Client Pictured

October 5, 2011 – 6:22 pm

Rumors of an Android (and iOS for that matter) version of BlackBerry Messenger go way back. We first heard of such possibility at the beginning of March but there was no official confirmation from Research in Motion.

The picture above is allegedly showing off BlackBerry Messenger on Android. The phone is a Blackberry Android Dev Phone with stuck-on buttons but the screen seems to display an early build of RIM’s popular Messenger. According to reports, BlackBerry Messenger for Android might be rolled out at BlackBerry DevCon in San Francisco between October 18 – 20. As always with leaks, make sure you’re a bit skeptical when judging.

BlackBerry 7 OS devices to finally get WiFi Hot Spot support

September 14, 2011 – 1:42 pm

The BlackBerry 7 OS devices recently launched have on their boxes the label “Hot Spot Capable,” and yet none are capable of this feature just yet. A leaked memo to the Now Network carrier, however, reveals that the mobile WiFi Hot Spot feature will be coming soon via a software update in the coming months.

The leaked memo informs the carrier’s employees to “educate” customers that the Hot Spot feature advertised on the packaging is not yet available, but will arrive with the first major software update in Q4. This means that at least the BlackBerry Torch 9850 will soon be getting the much requested feature.

It’s unclear at this point, whether the other BlackBerry 7 OS devices released recently, such as the BlackBerry Bold 9900/9930 and the BlackBerry Torch 9810, will also be getting the mobile Hot Spot capability in the next update. The feature could be carrier-specific.
