Samsung Wave 3 launches around the world

November 28, 2011 – 3:36 pm

If you like Samsung smartphones with alternative operating systems you might want to listen up with the Wave 3 smartphone launching globally. The Wave 3 is a nice looking smartphone that runs the Samsung bada OS. We were hands on with the Wave 3 back in early September.

Samsung calls the Wave 3 smartphone its flagship offering and it has a 4-inch WVGA super AMOLED screen. The Wave 3 also runs a 1.4GHz processor and has a 5MP rear camera with autofocus and a LED flash along with a VGA resolution front camera. It operates on networks that will let it work in countries around the world.

The Wave 3 runs BADA 2.0 and as of today, it is available in Germany, Italy, Russia, as well as the French market it first launched in. Samsung notes the smartphone will come to other countries later this year. There is barely a month left in this year so those other locations will have to come soon. We also heard in September that Bada would go open source in 2012.

It’s shaping up to a be a busy IFA for Samsung. Barely 24 hours after announcing its new ChatON messaging client, the manufacturer is now gearing up to release a troika of new Bada 2.0-powered Wave handsets — the Wave 3, Wave M and Wave Y — set to make their debut this week in Berlin. Leading the pack is the Wave 3, which leaked earlier this week. Rounding out the collection is the Wave Y, with its 3.2-inch HVGA display, 832MHz engine and two megapixel camera. All three feature your usual smattering of WiFi / Bluetooth 3.0 capabilities and will ship with ChatON and Samsung’s Social Hub baked into their DNA.

Samsung Wave 725 with Bada 2.0 has its specs leaked

July 13, 2011 – 9:40 am

A couple of months back, three Bada devices were leaked onto the internet, and only one had a name – the Samsung Wave 578. Now thanks to the folks at BadaWorld, who combed through the Bada 2.0 SDK, another device has been named, and this one is called the Samsung Wave 725. Apart from its name, it looks like its specs have also been revealed in the process.

Specs of the Samsung Wave 725 include a 3.65-inch HVGA display with 320×480 resolution, a 5-megapixel rear camera, a VGA front-facing camera for video conferencing capabilites, along with WiFi and Bluetooth 3.0 capabilities while running on Bada 2.0. The Samsung Wave 725 will come with NFC capabilities, which can also be found in the other two Bada devices. It should also be noted that the picture to the right is not the Wave 725 and is just a rendering.

Bada may not be that significant in America, although it has done surprisingly well for itself in Europe, and it would be interesting to see how the American market will receive the OS, especially since the US smartphone market is currently dominated by Android and iOS, although that may change with Bada 2.0, or at least that’s what Samsung hopes.

No word on pricing, but if what BadaWorld has managed to uncover, the device should be seeing a release in September.

Samsung calls Symbian developers to join the bada community

March 11, 2011 – 11:41 am

Samsung is betting placing a bet on the frustration of Symbian developers disagreeing with Nokia’s decision to embrace Windows Phone 7. Hence they’ve sent an email to a group of India-based mobile developers who showed up at Sammy’s recent developer conference in the country. Here’s what it [email] says:

If you are a Symbian developer unhappy about Nokia’s recent announcements, and are hence looking for a new platform to showcase your talents, we say “Hello!” and “Welcome to bada!” If you’re new to the bada development, or are moving your app from Symbian, we’d like to welcome you with the ‘Quick guide to bada development’. In about 15 minutes, you can learn how to build your first bada app!

Neat strategy, but will it work? I’m in the group of people who doubt the prospects of Samsung’s home-made platform. As a matter of fact, I think Samsung itself is not that confident on bada’s future since they also support Android and Windows Phone 7… What do you think?

Despite Android and other platforms taking center stage nowadays, Samsung is still focusing on its bada OS’ future and the Korean giant has confirmed that it plans to support it strongly. Reports are in that bada OS 2.0 will be a major leap from the current version 1.2, offering improved features such as a new user interface, Near Field Communication (NFC) support, smarter home screen, SDK support for Linux and Mac and more. Samsung: ‘we are prioritizing our Android platform’

September 3, 2010 – 12:05 pm

Samsung may be one of the big players that Microsoft is pinning its hopes on for Windows Phone 7, but you wouldn’t know that from listening to the company at IFA. Speaking to Reuters at the show, Samsung’s head of marketing for its mobile division, YH Lee, said flatly that “we are prioritizing our Android platform,” adding that, “Android is very open and flexible, and there is a consumer demand for it.” Lee further went on to note that the company will continue to focus on its own Bada platform (at least outside of North America), but seemingly downplayed Windows Phone 7 when asked about it, saying only that “there is still some professional, specialized demand there.” Ouch. Oh, and in case you’re wondering, Samsung also says it’s “not seeing visible demand for Symbian.”

Samsung Wave moves more than a million units worldwide

July 13, 2010 – 10:26 pm

While Samsung did not expect their bada-powered Wave smartphone to be as fantastic selling as the iPhone or EVO 4G, the company’s top brass should be pretty happy to know that their first bada phone has passed the 1 million mark in terms of global sales – and to make the achievement all the sweeter, this figure was reached before its 4-week birthday. bada has yet to capture the imagination of developers at point of publishing, so it will be interesting to see just how they try to catch up with rivals such as iOS and Android.

Samsung extend bada with Wave 2 S5250 and Wave 2 Pro S5330

June 15, 2010 – 3:40 pm

Samsung had always promised that the Wave S8500 would be just the first of several bada devices, and now the second and third smartphones based on the platform have arrived.  The Samsung Wave 2 S5250 and Samsung Wave 2 Pro S5330 are more affordable versions of the original bada phone, each with a 3.2-inch WQVGA LCD display (rather than the Wave’s Super AMOLED), no 3G (EDGE max) and a 3-megapixel camera.  The Wave 2 Pro also gets a slide-out QWERTY keyboard.

You still get WiFi b/g/n but the Bluetooth is 2.1+EDR rather than 3.0; meanwhile there’s no DivX or Xvid playback either.  A-GPS, an accelerometer, microUSB and a microSD card slot are all present, as is an FM radio and 3.5mm headphone socket.

The Samsung Wave 2 (S5250) and Wave 2 Pro (S5330) will be available from August in Russia and South East Asia. Customers can choose from the colors metallic black, pearl white and romantic pink; no word on pricing at this stage.

Note to Editors:

Building on the success of the Samsung Wave, the Wave 2 and Wave 2 Pro are expected to significantly increase the total volume of bada smartphones on the market. With this volume and the growing popularity of Samsung Apps, Samsung’s bada platform will attract more and more developers.

To encourage developers to create content for bada, Samsung launched the ‘bada Developer Challenge’, the biggest application contest in 2010. Samsung has set aside a prize pot totaling $ 2,700,000 for this event. Three hundred developers made it to the first round will receive the Samsung Wave. The contest winner will receive $300,000.
