Say Hello to PlayStation Vita, Sony’s Next PSP

June 7, 2011 – 9:44 am

Sony has just lifted the curtain on the PlayStation Vita, the company’s next-generation portable gaming device.

The device, originally codenamed “NGP,” made its debut at Sony’s E3 press conference in Los Angeles. The device looks exactly like the prototypes that leaked earlier this year.

The PSP’s successor includes a high-resolution, 5-inch OLED touchscreen (960 x 544 pixels), two analog sticks, rear touch controls, 6-axis motion sensors and dual front- and back-facing cameras. The device is supposed to run a quad-core ARM Cortex A9 processor.

The Vita also comes with 3G and WiFi connectivity. AT&T will be the Vita’s exclusive 3G launch partner (much to the disappointment of the audience).

The PlayStation Vita hits the market sometime during this year’s holiday season. It will cost $249 for the Wi-Fi version and $299 for the 3G version. Some of the titles in development for the Vita include LitteBIG Planet,Uncharted: Golden AbyssStreet Fighter X Tekken and Ruin.

Sony S2 clamshell Android tablet clears FCC with AT&T HSPA+

June 6, 2011 – 2:45 pm

One of Sony’s first Android tablets has been caught at the FCC, complete with HSPA+ support and a removable Li-Ion battery pack. Engadget spotted the dual-screen Sony S2, listed as the Sony SGPT211US, as it gained approval for its Ericsson F5521gw modem, which supports the 850 and 1900 MHz 3G bands that AT&T uses, with up to 21Mbps HSPA+ speeds network-depending.

There’s also WiFi b/g/n 2.4GHz confirmed, along with Bluetooth. The battery is a 3080 mAh pack; Sony is yet to suggest how many hours of runtime users will be able to expect from the clamshell tablet, which has a pair of 5.5-inch touchscreens.

Sony has previously said that the S2 will arrive sometime this fall, along with its single-screen sibling the S1. No indication of pricing or what processor the tablets will use has been given, though Sony has made it clear that it intends to customize the UI somewaht.

Unboxing the HP Veer 4G for AT&T

May 24, 2011 – 11:30 am

We’ve just gotten our review unit for the HP Veer 4G, and we figured we’d better get this thing unboxed for you guys sooner than later. It’s the newest webOS device for AT&T, and this thing is tiny. If you thought the Pre or Pixi was small, wait until you see this thing. Its length and width make it smaller than a credit card, and though it’s thicker than an iPhone or the Samsung Infuse 4G, you can hardly tell because of its petite overall stature.

There isn’t a whole lot of junk in the box, which is nice considering how small the device is. But don’t let its stature fool you, the thing does pack a bit of weight and heft for its size. It also feels solid right out of the box and the click of the sliding mechanism is satisfyingly firm.

We’re grinding away at the review, but for now check out our quick unboxing and stay tuned for the rest of our thoughts this week.

HTC Holiday to be a 4.5-inch behemoth with qHD resolution, 1.2GHz dual-core, and AT&T future

May 23, 2011 – 12:05 pm

HTC brought in the 4.3-inch craze, but now that that form factor has gone mainstream, it’s looking to even larger dimensions. A 4.5-inch HTC Holiday has been dug up by none other than 911sniper, which is said to pack a qHD resolution (960 x 540), a 1.2GHz dual-core Qualcomm MSM8660, 1GB of RAM, an 8 megapixel camera, and the very latest version of Android Gingerbread (2.3.4). That comes on the heels of Pocketnow unearthing a supposed image of the AT&T-bound smartphone, showing a predictably uncomplicated design framing a vast display. Let’s just hope the Holiday codename doesn’t mean we’ll have to wait till the holidays to see this overpowered new beast in action.

HP Pre 3 Pre-Orders Open In Europe, Available Late June

May 20, 2011 – 11:14 am

While HP’s webOS-powered Veer has just arrived in the States, it’s beefier big brother, the Pre 3, is taking its good old time. We’ve seen what looks like both an AT&T and a Verizon-equipped Pre 3 get their FCC certifications, but haven’t heard just when the smartphone might go up for sale. HP’s site for the Pre 3 says that there’s “planned availability this summer”, but just when and where? The first signs of upcoming Pre 3 sales have surfaced, with the German version of Amazon now accepting pre-orders for the smartphone.

You can place your order now for the Pre 3, which Amazon.de says will be available as of June 30. The off-contract smartphone will set you back the equivalent of about $640. For that money, you’ll be getting a phone powered by a 1.40GHz Snapdragon, with 512MB of RAM, a 3.58-inch WVGA display, and 8GB of storage; we haven’t found the 16GB version of the phone up for pre-order yet.

According to the FCC docs we saw, the Pre 3 may usher in the next decimal revision of webOS, with version 2.3 noted as present on the evaluated model. What changes will the update have in store? We should know for sure in a little over a month. Hopefully by then, we’ll also have word on when the smartphone will be introduced into other markets around the world.

HP Veer Caught In White, Complete With AT&T Branding

April 29, 2011 – 11:18 pm

We’ve been pretty sure that HP’s itty-bitty webOS phone, the Veer, would be hitting AT&T for a few weeks now — ever since invites for the device’s internal “Launch Party” specified that an AT&T employee ID was required for attendees. We’re also pretty sure that it’s launching on May 2nd.

Even still, HP had one little trick left up its sleeve: like all the other cool phones these days, it looks like the Veer is also coming in white.. sort of. Most of it is white, while the face remains black (we’re hearing that Palm’s designers did this to make the screen look a bit bigger), as does all of the buttonry (buttonry is now a word.)

What do you think? I’m sort of diggin’ the half black/half white color scheme.

[Shout out to PocketNow for digging up that photo]

HTC HD7 becomes HTC HD7S, gets better screen, heads to AT&T`

March 22, 2011 – 8:58 am

CITA 2011: HD7 gets Super LCD screen

AT&T has announced that buying T-Mobile is not the only thing the company has in common with its new acquisition.

It has just announced that it will be stocking a variant of the HTC HD7 smartphone, currently available on T-Mobile USA, which it is going to call the HTC HD7S

It means that the HTC HD7S will be the largest screen on a Windows Phone from AT&T and will include the latest version of Windows Phone 7 software that offers many new benefits including the ability to copy and paste text.

AT&T is also bumping up the spec on the screen with an improved 4.3-inch 800 x 480 Super LCD high-resolution display from a standard LCD screen.

Aside from that, there are no differences over the first iteration of the phone launched in the UK, and in the US on T-Mobile last October. It features a 1GHz single-core processor and 5-megapixel camera with dual-LED flash.

The phone will be available in the US in the next couple of weeks.

In related news AT&T has also said that it will be stocking the US variant of the LG Optimus 3D, which it will be calling the LG Thrill 4G. The AT&T version will add 4G connectivity when it comes out in the US later in the year.

WSJ: Nokia X7 canceled for AT&T, but at Espoo’s behest

January 20, 2011 – 1:44 pm

Our subsidized Symbian superphone dreams remain squashed, but it looks like we might have a different party to blame — the Wall Street Journal‘s anonymous sources say it was Nokia itself who decided to pull plans to launch the X7 exclusively on AT&T. Originally, the phone would have waved the white globe banner at Mobile World Congress next month, but Nokia reportedly decided that AT&T didn’t have its back, and wouldn’t provide sufficient marketing support — and cheap enough subsidized prices — to make it worth the company’s while. If you simply must have the handset and live in the US, though, we’re sure you’ll still find a way. It’s only a matter of time before Nokia launches in countries more willing to play ball… and unlocked models appear on eBay.

Jabra Stone2 is out this week — but AT&T and Verizon are carrying different versions

November 23, 2010 – 9:34 pm

In the off chance that you have your fingers on the pulse of the Bluetooth headset industry, you know darn well that Jabra’s curiously-designed Stone2 went on sale this week. What you may not know, however, is that the version you get depends on where you buy it. Turns out both AT&T and Verizon have decided to carry the units in-store, but AT&T went with a glossy black (pictured left) while Big Red opted for a “sexy, black leather finish” (pictured right). Both versions are the same $129.99 at the counter, so it really comes down to which design you prefer — don’t let any silly carrier preferences or undying brand loyalty get in the way. Just don’t show your AT&T phone in the Verizon store or vice versa, lest you start a melee the likes of which your town has never seen.

Jabra rolls out Stone2 on November 21st, just as UFO-like as the original

November 11, 2010 – 11:13 am

Bluetooth headsets look strange enough hanging off your ear as it is, so why not maximize the shock factor? Jabra’s Stone is equal parts strange and elegant, and it would appear that the newly-announced Stone2 is making no attempt to diverge from that formula. Apart from some minor tweaks, the overall curved design and matching charging dock appear to be largely unchanged from the original model, but the Stone2′s claim to fame is the fact that it’s now a completely touch-free experience to use: if a call comes in, you just say “answer” or “ignore” and the phone will do your bidding. Never mind the fact that the people around you at the coffee shop are more convinced than ever that you’re talking to yourself, we suppose. Look for it in AT&T stores on the 21st of this month for $129.99.
