Photos: LG Optimus One Black on Three

May 12, 2011 – 1:28 pm

I’ve just received the LG Optimus One Black from our friends at Three. It’s a budget Android handset but with plenty of features you’d find on a more expensive handset including Android 2.2. You can pick one up from Three for just £13 per month on a 24 month contract or £129.99 on Pay As You Go, and with Three’s new plans, you can include All-You-Can-Eat data from just £15 per top-up.

We’ll hopefully get more pics and video over the coming days but for now, here are some shots for you to enjoy.

Advent’s Vega tablet gets a little sweeter with the addition of Android 3.0 (video)

May 10, 2011 – 3:12 pm

There’s plenty of Android tablets out there, but you could certainly do a lot worse than the Advent Vega with its Tegra 2 innards and £199 ($326) asking price. You may take issue with its outdated OS, but thankfully a couple of hackers have replaced the Vega’s antiquated Android 2.2 with a heaping helping of Honeycomb. It’s currently an alpha release, so while widgets and apps are working well, camera capabilities, screen rotation, web-surfing on WiFi, and most everything else is currently off limits. There’s still plenty of work to be done, but seeing Advent’s slate running buttery smooth Android 3.0 with aplomb (even if unofficially) makes us think it’s a better bargain than ever before. Check out how the Vega looks sporting its slick new threads in the video after the break.

Only 4 percent of Android users have Gingerbread

May 5, 2011 – 11:17 am

We’ve been raving about Android 2.3 Gingerbread for months now but chances are you haven’t had a chance to play with it yet. According to Google’s monthly Android stats, only 4 percent of Android users are on the Gingerbread version of the platform. That’s sad.

Android 2.3 Gingerbread launched nearly five months ago on the Samsung Nexus S and it brought an improved keyboard, better web performance and an overall boost in across-the-board performances. Still, only 3 percent of users are on Android 2.3.3 while 1 percent are on 2.3.

The vast majority of uses are using Froyo, as 65.9 percent of consumers are on Android 2.2. The Froyo platform is still highly capable but it’s disappointing to see the lack of updates. Eclair, or 2.1, accounts for 24.5 percent, while 5.3 percent are still on Doughnut or lower.

Even worse, only 0.3 percent of users are on the Android Honeycomb platform, which doesn’t portend well for the Motorola Xoom sales. Still, we should see a variety of Honeycomb tablets in the near future, so expect that number to rise rapidly.

Who should we be blaming? Well, every party has a role to play. Handset makers like Samsung and HTC insist on putting its own customized UI layer on top and this takes time to work with new versions. For an over-the-air update, the software must go through various testing and this also holds up the process.

Google could be more open with its partners too, as I’ve heard from multiple companies which don’t get a look at what the next version will look like until the SDK is released. Heck, even end users could be making this happen if they raise a big enough stink.

With a new version already coming (learn how to manually install it here) and potentially more goodies at next week’s I/O conference, expect this issue to get worse. Sigh.

ViewSonic ViewPad 10 gets Android update

May 4, 2011 – 6:09 pm

The dual-operating system tablet from ViewSonic, the ViewPad 10 has just received an update that brings its outdated Android operating system from 1.5 to a not-so-outdated version 2.2. The tablet that gives users the best of both worlds – a mobile tablet experience with Android and a productive workspace with Windows 7, now has more features on its Android-side of the tablet.

With the Froyo update, users will be able to tether natively, view Flash files, and experience all the optimizations and benefits that come with Android 2.2. ViewSonic has released the update instructions(PDF) on how to update the tablet – it basically consists of loading the update onto a USB drive, and plugging it into the tablet with a USB keyboard as well.

No word on whether a Honeycomb or Gingerbread update will be arriving though it’ll be interesting to see if the Windows 7 OS can be updated to Windows 8 when it arrives. What do you think?

HTC Droid Incredible 2 officially announced

April 26, 2011 – 5:49 pm

It took its time, but it’s almost here. HTC has just officially announced the HTC Incredible 2 today. Prior to today, there have been countless leaks about the Android smartphone and today’s announcement confirms all the details we’ve already known for awhile now. The HTC Droid Incredible 2 is the successor to the original Droid Incredible, and rebranded for Verizon’s network (it’s called the Incredible S in other countries).

The HTC Droid Incredible 2 will be a global phone, meaning you’ll be able to use it in over 200 countries all over the world (just as long as you plug a supported SIM card into the phone). It comes with a 4″ screen, a 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, Android 2.2 with HTC Sense, an 8 megapixel camera with dual LED flash and 720p HD video recording capabilities; a 1.3megapixel front facing camera, Adobe Flash Player, WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS. It also packs SRS WOWHD surround sound, and integrated noise cancellation for improved sound quality be it for entertainment or having conversations.

The HTC Droid Incredible 2 will go on sale this Thursday, April 28, for $199.99 and a 2-year contract. With no 4G LTE and an outdated version of Android, this phone might be a pretty hard sell at that price, but its global-phone capabilities and large screen should draw some attention.

Dell Streak 7 UK release is here

April 14, 2011 – 5:50 pm

£299 and ready to rock

The Dell Streak 7 has finally reached the UK, having been available in the USA since the beginning of February on T-Mobile USA.

The Dell Streak 7, is the bigger brother of the Dell Streak 5 and will cost £299 without contract – incidentally the same price as the Samsung Galaxy Tab after a bevy of price drops in recent months.

For you’re hard earned pocket money, you’ll get a 7-inch Gorilla Glass touting tablet that runs Android 2.2 rather than Honeycomb.

Of course you’ll also get a rear-facing 5 megapixel camera for high-definition stills and video recording, Wi-Fi, and a dual core 1GHz NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor and full support for Adobe Flash Player.

Those however hoping to use the tablet without a wireless hotspot nearby will be out of luck for the time being. A 3G version is on the cards says Dell, however you’ll have to wait for later this Spring – so hopefully some time before June – before it becomes available.

No word on which operator will be stocking it, whether it will be subsidised, or indeed when exactly it will be available.

We will keep you posted.

Samsung Galaxy Pro now available on Three

April 11, 2011 – 5:30 pm

If you ever owned the Nokia E71, you’ll remember what a fantastic little work horse it was and the ability to knock out text messages faster than Justin Bieber’s tweets. Well Samsung have dropped a new Android form factor in the shape of the new Samsung Galaxy Pro. It takes it’s looks from the E71 but this baby ain’t saddled with no Symbian. It’s rocking full fat Froyo! That’s right Android 2.2 with all it’s Flash 10.1 goodness.

It get’s even better! You can take one of these home today courtesy of Three UK from just £20 per month (free handset) on a 24 month contract or £149.99 on Pay As You Go. Personally I think I would opt for the 3PAYG and stick a £25 SIM Only on The One Plan in it. This way your free of contract after 12 months.

Checkout the specs below and a nice little video for your enjoyment.

INQ Cloud Touch Facebook phone graces store shelves in UK, wallets smile

April 11, 2011 – 3:36 pm

The first round of the Facebook Phone war is underway in the UK, thanks to INQ launching the first javelin at its main opponent. Even as we continue to wait for HTC’s Facebook offerings to come out sometime this summer, the INQ Cloud Touch has shown up on Carphone Warehouse shelves for a rather affordable £300 off-contract, or about $486. We were quick to Like the entry-level handset when we handled it back in February; the Froyo-powered device features an 800MHz Qualcomm MSM7227 processor, 5 megapixel sensor, and a custom Android homescreen that fully integrates the Facebook experience into the OS. While the specs may not be enough to make the Android enthusiast salivate, the price will almost definitely cause status-obsessed tweens to commence drooling.

Video: Kyocera Echo Unboxed Over 2 Weeks Early

March 31, 2011 – 11:26 am

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fXGFAtWN2WA

Look, Wirefly: I’m going to be candid here. If your goal is to make friends with the blogging world so that everyone will share these videos you’ve taken to making lately, unboxing every handset that comes through your stock room weeks before release isn’t the way to do it.

When you start doing these videos, you’ve entered into a different realm — one where we battle to convince reps to send us handsets early, live as close to shipping hubs as possible, wake up at the crack of dawn to meet the UPS guy at his truck, then blast out videos at a breakneck pace in hopes of being the first to get one online. When you’re shooting videos with handsets you’ve got early because you’re supposed to sell them, you’re cheating.

With that said, here’s Wirefly’s unboxing of the Kyocera Echo. It’ll likely be the last of their unboxings we post.

INQ Cloud Touch gets priced in the UK, still MIA in the USA

March 21, 2011 – 10:34 am

We’ve had an affinity for INQ’s Cloud Touch since we Poked and prodded the little device back in February, and now thanks to Carphone Warehouse we’ve got the all important pricetag to accompany the specs. Starting April 6, you’ll be able to pick up the Facebook-ified device in the UK completely SIM-free for £300, or about $486. Not a bad deal for a 3.5-inch Android 2.2 handset with a 5-megapixel shooter and a custom Facebook homescreen. Of course, it lacks the Facebook Buttons of HTC’s offerings, but if you simply can’t wait to be the first person on the block with a Facebook phone you should definitely give the Cloud Touch a peek.
