4.8-inch device gets New York event airing

It’s all go over in New York for Acer.

Not content with unleashing the dual-screen Iconia and announcing that it will be releasing three tablets next year, the Taiwanese company also showed off a new Android smartphone with a whopping 4.8-inch screen.

Now, the press release that accompanied the announcement said that the device is 100 per cent smartphone and 100 per cent tablet, but we’ve done the math(s) and we don’t think that’s possible.

However, what is for sure is that it’s a monster of a phone and, with the Android version not yet being stated, it could be a Honeycomb device.

On board it is packing a 1GHz Snapdragon processor, as well as an 8-megapixel (with flash) camera on the back and a 2-megapixel one on the front.

But it’s the LED backlit screen that’s most intriguing; it has a cinema style ratio of 21:9 thanks to the 1024 x 480 resolution.

Add to this the Dolby Mobile technology, Flash support and DLNA tech as well, then you could be looking at an incredibly video friendly device.

As well as Acer’s new out-of-the-box, media sharing clear.fi technology, the handset also boasts a 6-axis motion sensing control system with a gyroscope and accelerometer built in.

Connectivity is via HSDPA, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 3.0, and there’s also a HDMI out option as well.

There’s no pricing or availability details yet (it hasn’t even got a name), but we’ll of course bring you any breaking news.

Acer Aspire RevoView network media streamer ships this month in the UK

November 4, 2010 – 3:58 pm

Hard to say if it’s too little, too late, but one thing’s for darn sure — Acer definitely has a lot of competition to shake off if it wants this Aspire RevoView to truly succeed. Announced originally way back in May, this here network media streamer is just now gaining an image, price and release date.

It’s able to fetch content from USB hard drives, an internal 3.5-inch HDD, a memory card slot or the world wide web, but the latter seems contained to just YouTube, Picasa and Flickr for the time being. It’ll push things out via an HDMI socket on the rear, and the bundled remote will keep your keister firmly planted while it’s in operation. No word on whether or not this fellow will ever leave the confines of the UK, but it’ll go on sale there next week for £119.99 ($193).

Google-branded Chrome OS smartbook launching this month?

November 2, 2010 – 11:14 am

If the damp blanket of leaves warming the ground is any indicator, then we’d say that fall has arrived in the Northern Hemisphere. That means Google’s Chrome OS is due. What better time for DigiTimes to cite sources from “component players” claiming that the first smartbooks featuring Google’s other operating system will launch later this month.

According to the Taiwanese rumor rag, Google will follow its Nexus One strategy and be first from the gate with the launch of a self-branded Chrome OS notebook manufactured by Inventec — the ARM-based machine will not be sold through normal retail channels and is expectated to ship a very modest 60,000 to 70,000 units.

Acer and HP are then rumored to be launching Quanta-manufactured Chrome OS gear as early as December while ASUS waits to gauge market reaction. Of course, if all of this is true then we should be getting a Google event press invite right about, well, now.

Acer To Follow Toshiba In Dual-screen Netbooks

September 13, 2010 – 8:37 am

The other up-and-coming trend nowadays, other than tablets, is dual-screen netbooks. Toshiba’s Libretto was almost quite there but was hampered by the current technology. A few months seem to have made a difference as Acer is currently testing a rig that may provide the perfect dual-screen experience. Early pictures of a dual 15 inch multitouch screens show it to be looking pretty good. The big change seems to be the 2.67GHz Intel Core i5 processor. However, insider sources say that it’s still a bit slow and buggy so expect a long wait before the final release.

Acer Stream unboxing video

August 27, 2010 – 1:14 pm

You are now watching: Acer Stream unboxing video

It has been a wee while since we have had a new Android device from Acer but the Stream is here and its specs are on par with many of the top end handsets from other manufactures. Sporting a 3.7 inch screen and powered by a 1Ghz Snapdragon processor the Stream with Android 2.1 on board certainly has what it takes to be a flagship device but looks wise it is defiantly unique. I don’t think we have seen media controls on the front of another Android phone before and it looks a bit odd to be honest.

Android-booting Acer Aspire One D255 extensively demoed, yet far from loved on video

August 20, 2010 – 11:36 am

Acer’s just told us that it has “no imminent plans” to bring the dual-booting Android and Windows XP Aspire One D255 stateside, and after seeing an in-depth video (no, really it’s 14 minutes long!) of the 10-inch netbook in action we can’t say we’re all that upset about the news. Yep, the NetbookNews team snatched up a light blue version of the new netbook in Taipei, and though they were impressed with the thin design and included case, they had less positive things to say on the software end. Not only is the Windows XP desktop ridden with crapware, but the Android implementation is still half baked. Similar to the first generation Acer Aspire One D250, the Android 2.1 interface is really only good for searching the web and checking e-mail since it doesn’t have access to the Market. Of course, we urge you to sit back and watch the lengthy hands-on video after the break to make your own call on this $299 lappie, but ultimately, we’re assuming you’ll have the same question as us: Acer, how’s that Chrome OS netbook coming along?

Acer’s Android-powered Stream confirmed for Expansys-exclusive August 9th launch

July 27, 2010 – 8:59 am

Acer’s Android-powered Stream phone already got official way back in May — and we got our hands on it at Computex in June — but the company has only just now confirmed a launch date. According to Acer, the Stream will be rolling out on August 9th, and it’ll be exclusive to UK-based online retailer Expansys, at least initially. As for the phone itself, you can expect a 1GHz Snapdragon processor, a 3.7-inch AMOLED screen, Android 2.1 for an OS, a 5-megapixel camera with 720p video recording (no flash, though), an HDMI out port, and full DLNA / UPnP support for media streaming (hence the name). Of course, being exclusive to Expansys also means you won’t be getting a subsidized price — look for this one to set you back £399, or just over $600. .

Update: And it looks like we’ve got our first unboxing with the final retail packaging. Video’s after the break.
