Amped Wireless gives your WiFi 1.5-mile range: never lose signal in the garden again

October 25, 2011 – 1:45 pm

Those of us stationed inside the Engadget compound are always wishing we had better WiFi signal at the outer reaches of the battlements. Thank heavens for Amped Wireless’ range of professional networking tools. With a 600mW amplifier and a high-gain bi-directional antenna, its SR600EX Pro Smart Repeater can expand the range of your internet transmissions by up to 1.5 miles. The device also has two extra network ports for other devices and is designed for large buildings, boats, RVs or, you know… massive gadget labs. On the other hand, the AP600EX Pro Access Point can sit on the end of a wired network and do the same job for building-to-building connections. Both devices come with a 30-foot power-over-ethernet cable and are available today for $180.

Motorolo MOTOACTV takes on iPod nano

October 19, 2011 – 3:53 pm

Motorola has unveiled its own interpretation of the smartwatch PMP, the MOTOACTV, a 1.6-inch touchscreen Android gadget that packs GPS and up to 4,000 of your songs. Intended to track your fitness in a similar way to Nike+, the MOTOACTV is sweat resistant and includes both an FM radio and an integrated audio coach that tells you how fast you’re going and how far you’ve run.

Meanwhile a companion site, MOTOACTV.com, allows you to plan you route and then monitor your performance over time, setting goals and challenging your friends to beat them. It’s intended to work with Motorola’s SF700 and SF500 wireless Bluetooth headphones, which also include heart-rate monitors to feed info to the MOTOACTV itself.

Battery life is up to five hours of outdoor workouts, up to ten hours of indoor workouts, or nearly two weeks of standby. There’s both Bluetooth 4.0 and ANT+ connectivity, all in something 46 x 46 x 9.6 mm and 35g. An FM radio is also integrated.

Unfortunately, all this wrist-borne fitness doesn’t come cheap. Motorola has two versions of the MOTOACTV in the pipeline, priced at $249 for the 8GB version and $299 for the 16GB version. They’ll both go on sale in the US on November 6, with European availability in Q1 2012.

Nokia Essence promises 99.8 percent noise cancellation, lets you listen to Ke$ha in peace

October 19, 2011 – 10:24 am

In-ear headphones that cancel out almost all of the background noise? Yes, please. The Nokia Essence is the latest stereo Bluetooth to hit the market, and it’s poised to eliminate as much of the world around you as possible — 99.8 percent of it, at least. As many earbuds impel the user to turn up the volume level just to hear more bass, the idea with the Essence is to zap out low-frequency background noises (such as traffic) to provide a deeper bass sound without having to crank up the knob to 11. The Essence is also equipped with NFC for easy tap-to-pair functionality. Scroll down below to see a video showing a guy who’s getting the most out of his new headphones.

Motorola intros Elite Sliver and Elite Flip Bluetooth headsets with NFC pairing (video)

October 18, 2011 – 11:25 am

Bluetooth headsets are normally the province of businesspeople so important they can’t spare the energy to hold a phone to their ears or, perhaps, folks who just want to play CIA agent. If you find yourself in either category, Motorola’s newest offerings will put what passes for a smile on your serious businessperson face. The outfit just took the wraps off two Elite series headsets, both equipped with NFC pairing, so one tap ‘twixt phone and earpiece will have you ready to simultaneously drive and talk. You’ll also get integration with My Motospeak, now capable of dictating text messages as well as hearing them read to you, HD-Audio, CrystalTalk noise cancellation and a roaming distance of 300 feet. While the Flip looks the part of your typical earpiece, the Sliver (above left) has decidedly more futuristic digs. Both will be available on October 24th with the Flip costing $100 and the Sliver fetching an extra $30 for its avant-garde design. We’ve got PR after the break along with a demo video — because who doesn’t love watching cartoon characters explain how NFC works?

Motorola LAPDOCK 100 turns select Moto smartphones into laptops

October 13, 2011 – 9:42 am

This is the moment we’ve all been waiting for, the moment when smartphones are beginning to replace laptop computers. The newly unveiled Motorola LAPDOCK 100 connects to select Moto smartphones effectively turning them into laptops.

To be fair, we’ve already seen something similar in the past with Celio REDFLY products, which worked with Windows Mobile devices, providing users with big screen and big keyboard. This time, however, we’re talking about an Android-based solution and we’re hoping other handset manufacturers and/or third-party accessory makers will release more of such “docks” that sing along an array of smartphones.

The Motorola LAPDOCK 100 weighs 2.2lbs (less than 1Kg) and works with the Motorola ATRIX 2, PHOTON 4G, DROID BIONIC by Motorola, and will also be compatible with future Motorola webtop-enabled devices. It will be available online at AT&T on October 17th, and at Verizon Wireless and Sprint later this quarter. Love it!

If You’re European, Apple Now Lets You Charge Your iPhone via Micro USB

October 5, 2011 – 3:29 pm

Now that the iPhone 4S has been shown off to borderline middling interest, Apple is quietly rolling out this little dongle that allows you to charge your phone via Micro USB. Too bad it’s only in Europe (for now?).

The move follows the European Union’s pushing the Micro-USB format to become a standard. Rather than redesign the iPhone, they just made a workaround. You’ll likely have to pray you won’t lose it, but it’s something. It’ll be available Oct. 14th for £8.

Samsung announces HM7000 Bluetooth headset

September 29, 2011 – 2:57 pm

If you’re looking for a new Bluetooth headset, Samsung has just unveiled the Samsung HM7000 Bluetooth headset. One of the more interesting features of the HM7000 is that it comes with its own portable charging dock, which means that you are more or less ensured that your headset will not run out of battery in the middle of the day.

According to Samsung, the charging dock is said to be able to fully charge the headset three times over, thanks to its built-in battery. The headset itself will sport Samsung’s own noise cancellation technology, features dual mics and echo cancellation, which will aid in improving voice quality. It will also support voice commands with the FreeSync Android app (which is free on the Android Market). The app allows for text-to-speech capabilities for email, text messages, caller ID and more.

September 16, 2011 – 12:15 pm

If there’s one thing great about technology, it’s the ability to keep in touch with the people we care about even though they’re thousands of miles away. We’ve come a long way since the introduction of 320 x 240 webcams (remember those days?) and now HD video calling is slowly becoming the standard. Netgear NeoTV turns your HDTV smart

September 15, 2011 – 3:54 pm

Netgear is taking on Apple TV, Roku and others with its new NeoTV streaming player, a compact set-top box packing integrated WiFi b/g/n and capable of funneling 1080p Full HD content to your TV. Billed as a straightforward way of making your dumb TV smart, when the $79.99 streamer goes on sale later this month it will offer over 100 “internet channels” including Netflix, Vudu HD, YouTube, Pandora and Vimeo, as well as social networks like Facebook and Twitter.

Connectivity includes HDMI, a wired ethernet port, 300Mbps WiFi (with a 2×2 antenna) and an S/PDIF digital optical audio, and while Netgear will bundle a simple remote with the NeoTV NTV200, the company will also offer smartphone remotes. iPhone or Android handset owners will be able to download a free remote control app from their respective software stores, with gesture control for channel navigation as well as an on-screen QWERTY keyboard for easier text entry and search.

Netgear promises to add more channels all the time, but with Vudu HD there’s already support for Blu-ray quality streaming movies accessible at the same time as their physical release. For free content, there’s YouTube Leanback, while a clever “Fling” feature allows you to instantly send videos you’re watching on your laptop straight to the NeoTV, and pick up watching them on your big-screen TV instead.
